Author Topic: Square Enix bringing back Super Mario RPG?  (Read 28989 times)

I went to a Mario RPG fansite and found a rumor going around that said Square Enix might be planning a remake or sequel to Super Mario RPG for the DS! If this rumor turns out to be partially true...

I have been waiting for a true sequel to Super Mario RPG since the game first game out. Yes, Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi were both amazing games, but there was something about them that was... different when compared to Mario RPG. I think Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga had many references to Super Mario RPG (the Geno cameo in the arcade room was an obvious one).

Why hasn't SMRPG been released on the Virtual Console yet? All the other classic Mario games have been released, so why not Mario RPG?

PLEASE SQUARE ENIX/NINTENDO! PLEASE BRING BACK SUPER MARIO RPG!
People who like video games should also like Nintendo. People who don't like Nintendo obviously don't like video games.

There's no question it will be released on VC eventually. Mario Maniac, why are you posting things which have no logical purpose here? Square and Nintendo aren't going to read this post and then magically comply.
That was a joke.

This rumor has been going around for a while, and with the GBA instead of the DS. But it's a FANSITE! They're gonna say what they want and assume it's to be true.

(The true difference is Luigi, For though's who don't know...)
Time is repeating itself. Why you say? Look at the Wii and NES and you'll know why.

Actually, if you look closely you can see that Mario had blue irides in SMRPG.  In M&L, they removed the irides, and he's all pupils.

I think that's the difference Mario Maniac was hinting at.

(I was kind of hinting at the fact that the games' styles were polar opposites; SMRPG is surrealistic while M&L is cartoony.)

Ah, I think I know what he's talking about.  Though, I always thought of it as being carved out of rectangular blocks (at least the in-game graphics; the instruction booklet art looks more "bubbly.")

The in-game graphics are just low-res conversions of the prerendered CG in the manual (and elsewhere).

« Reply #15 on: January 16, 2008, 12:29:40 AM »
The renders for the SMRPG characters did look "bubbly" and kind of lame. But at least we saw Yoshi in 3D. Sort of.

I'm still waiting for a picture of the render for Bahamutt (red dragon enemy in SMRPG, appeared in Bowser's Castle). I saw him in the Super Mario RPG Player's Guide, but every site I go to seems to conveniently forget about this render.

I would enjoy seeing SMRPG again, but there are other games I'd rather see first on Virtual Console.

And am I the only one to notice in the Mario & Luigi pic that Luigi has striped socks? *scared*

Ah, interesting tidbit... I knew the in-game graphics were converted 3D models (ala Donkey Kong Country)--but I never realized the models used in official game art were the same.  It makes me wonder, then, if the "bubbly" appearance happened after the fact--the result of getting features to show up well in teensie resolution.

I remember playing Super Mario RPG many years ago back when SNES wasn't legacy yet. It was pretty cool and I especially liked the music. There was some area in a forest that had one of the coolest songs, I still remember how it went all these years later and could play it on piano if I had to. I also remember it had some funny jokes in it...I think Bruce Lee was mentioned and I remember a guy named Mack the Knife. There was also this Wario-looking guy who tried to marry Peach.

Sure wish I had an SNES right now. Might have to shop around on eBay for one plus this game since it's not on the virtual console.

Area in the forest with the cool song is the Forest Maze (think that's the title). Considered one of the best songs in the game, if not the best.

Bruce Lee was mentioned when Mario was going to punch Bowyer's lights out, and Mallow stops him. Something like "Who do you think you are, Bruce Lee? You can't go in there with fists flying!"

Mack the Knife is the third boss in the game (if we don't count Bowser), he's at the Mushroom Kingdom, and he holds the first Star.

Wario-looking guy is Booster. Wonder how many people knew that in the official art for Booster, it looks like he has silver/metal teeth. I don't recall making out that detail from the Booster sprite.

Should have looked down a bit further. Hate that those darn game names aren't necessarily in alphabetical order. When looking closely at the two names, it looks like "Super  Mario  RPG" instead of "Super Mario RPG" (extra spaces), explaining why it's lower on the list. I'm definitely using a "Find" when searching on Galbadia Hotel from now on.

By the way, I hate Fileplanet. I understand why they have a queue, but it still annoys me when I have to wait an hour to download some small file. And I don't like the compulsory registration to download anything from it (if they're still doing that. I think they are). At least it's not as bad as one site that serves up old MS-DOS games, where you must participate in a survey or write a game review or some other piece of work before you can download the game. Those advertisement pages don't even work right.

That's because it depends on the server and how many people are on it. There are several files on one server, so if there's a lot of must-have files on one server, that'd explain why I had to wait an hour. But yeah, recently I've found the servers pretty empty, only waiting a couple minutes. Maybe it's because I'm not downloading during the height of Half-Life 2 popularity anymore.

I like all the Mario RPG's equally, but if I had to choose the best ones, It'd go like this, in worst to best order:

Super Mario RPG Legend Of The Seven Stars, Mario and Luigi Series, Paper Mario Series.

I still don't get why people don't like the most fun RPG most.
I made this order based on what I thought was the funnest.
The Mario series is the best! It has every genre in video games but RTS'! It also has a plumber who does different roles, a princess, and a lot of odd creatures who don't seem to poop!

And soooo....3 Paper Marios+2 Mario & Luigis = also 2 Super Mario RPG!!

Then there isn't 2 without 3! So There will be another Mario & Luigi + other 2 Super Mario RPGs!! X3

I'm sure they will do a sequel of Super Mario RPG, because it is one of the greatest games of Mario of ever! This is sure!
..But I don't know when, how, who, which one...what?@_@

Don't Forget Labrynna, Holodrum, Koholint Island and The Great Sea! Though I'm not sure The Great Sea really counts, as It's mostly located above Hyrule.

Curses! Well, I've been sick lately... my (Shadow)brain's not what it used to be.

Oh, and the Great Sea... isn't that supposed to be Hyrule, just flooded? (I never really did understand what was up with the castle and everything being underwater)

The reason that another Super Mario RPG would be amazing is because there has only been one, and it was made a over 10 years ago. We've already had enough Paper Mario and M&L for now.

Maybe if/when they make a true sequel, they could somehow tie in all the stuff that've been in the other RPG's (except for M&LPiT. That game was a good game, but it was not a good sequel. It just seemed to fail a bit).

The problem with Partners in Time was that it lacked that whole 'exploration' aspect that basically every single RPG is supposed to contain. You know... how you're told you need to do something in a certain place, but you need to figure out how to get there first. Partners in Time ruined it. Basically, it was just 6 or 7 identical repetitions of "Learn new move, new area opens up, go there, get magic item." Practically the entire game was Point A to Point B. It just felt... really... really confining. I absolutely did not like it, and ended up selling it. It was the first time I actually read a review of a Mario game online and thought "What the hell, that's way too high of a score!"

I'm with you 100% there (only I've still got it). "Excessively linear" is the key term here.

Paper Mario & Luigi RPG!

Honestly, I'm perfectly aware that there is a now-somewhat solidified trifecta of "Mario RPGs", but all we're really doing here is dividing games by graphical/play styles. Paper Mario was originally going to be called Super Mario RPG 2, for goodness sake.

Speaking of Mario and Luigi Partners in Time, the whole time travel thing...well... wasn't really important (to the story?) at all. The only thing you used time travel for, is to get to new areas, and to gets the baby forms of Mario and Luigi. You may have noticed that the only place you can ever visit in the present is Peach's Castle.

Also, the time paradoxes hardly seemed to fit. (I think there was only one anyway.) When you douse the Thowmp in Elvin Gadd's House, his future self instantly gets the smarts to make the hydrogush 4 thousand-whatever-number. On the other hand, the shroobs have the castle in the past, yet they do not have it already in the future. In fact, the future does not seem to be affected at ALL by the shroobs, except for the time holes. Seems a little inconsistent.

All in all, I think the only good thing I can say about that game, with the utmost sincerity, is that it had some awesome music.

Yeah, the graphics and music were definitely high points in that game. But it seems like Nintendo was focusing too hard on that rather than the rest of the game.

Nintendo? Focusing on graphics?

Actually, the graphics weren't too different from the original.

Yoko Shimomura IS and always will be the Mario RPG composer.

She is the only reason I could bare Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. Here piano pieces are fantastic. That and Kairi was the only interesting character besides the Organization XIII.

It was the Bros destiny to travel back in time and save the future. Hence no MuShroob Castle in the present.
