...But..."Yay" is not spelt that way in the context that you're using it in. It's spelled "Yea". They word you're using could be used in the sentence "It's about...yay high." So...yeah. Just thought I'd let you know. "Yea!" not "Yay!"

There is no ''I'' in team...Nor is there an ''I'' in group, gang, crew, squad, club, band, party, crowd, cluster, troop, or set.

But we're not saying yea, we're saying yay!

After checking several dictionaries (Webster's Online, Webster's NewWorld, Merriam-Webster, and Dictionary.com), I do not think you're correct if you're referring to the jon phenomenon.

Yea:
adverb: yes (used in voting)
adverb: more than this
noun: an affirmation
noun: an affirmative vote
noun: an affirmative voter
interjection: used as a positive exclamation (I had a hard time confirming this one) (slang?)

Yay:
interjection: used an exclamation of pleasure, approval, elation, or victory (used most commonly on this forum)
adverb: yes (used in voting)
adjective: so (as in "yay high") (slang)
noun: cocaine (slang)
noun: a branch of Thai languages

So it seems they are interchangeable in most cases, but I had to combine multiple dictionaries to get all the definitions.  I think as with many similar words, their meaning has morphed over time.

"Yay" is slang for cocaine?

Wow! You learn something new every day!

If people replaced "yay" with "cocaine" when posting here, this forum would be pretty messed up...

Jon would've been walking around yelling "Cocaine! Cocaine! COCAINE!!!"

Maybe he wanted to tell us he was on cocaine when he was posting?

You're all on the wrong track. jon was referring to a branch of Thai languages.

Thai!  Yay!  Lao!  Tho!  Saek!  Shan!  Nung!  Bouyei!  Mene!  Ahom!  Northern Zhuang!  Southern Zhuang!

Yay is such a strange word...
