People who are uninformed, lazy, or simply without regard write poorly; the use of pictures created with text does not automatically contribute to this. Even 1337 does not necessarily lend itself to mangled English when used appropriately. And Internet messages are pretty much the only medium where such things are appropriate.

LOL is an acronym for "laughing out loud." It's more fun if you actually say something rather than just typing the acronym, though.
