What was up with that Mario clone?

For those who've played SMRPG, you may remember a room in Johnny's ship where you ran into a guy that looked exactly like Mario and tried to block his path.

Seriously, what the dukes?

They never did explain that, leaving it open to speculation. Was it a Duplighost? A product of Balore? Some sort of Mario robot? And furthermore, what would Johnny want with a Mario clone anyway?

If you "talk" to it, it reveals itself to be a Greaper.

I can talk to it? I never knew! I'll have to try that.

Well you don't "talk" to it exactly, you just press A (checking it would be a more accurate term) and it becomes a Greaper and it fights you. There's a box in that room and you need to jump off his head to get it... Don't remember what's in the box but it's probably a frog coin. So, don't check him until you've gotten the box.
