 Heh, very nice thread title.

Looks interesting, but I don't think it'll change the fact that I'm terrible at Dance Dance Revolution.

Oh. My. Goodness.

MY WILDEST FANTASIES HAVE COME TRUE!

This is a better Christmas present than a DS. Seriously. This will be the best year of gaming known to mankind (with the possible exception of 1998 and 2004).

Please tell me, MEGAߥTE, is this real?  Frankly, the screenshots look fake, and the fact that I have heard nothing hinting at a Mario DDR game on IGN or anywhere else suggests that they are fake.  Then again, anything is possible, given that Mario is now appearing in NBA Street Volume 3...

If this IS a real development, and if (this is possibly an equally big if) such a game is ever realeased in the US, I will almost certainly buy it.  But I'm guessing it's fake...

Hm. . .I never was to interested in DDR. Or any kind of think like parrapa the rapper of Channel 7 or whatever that dancing game that sega came out with is.

I'd just like to say that I had roughly 8,632 times the amount of fun playing Space Channel 5 Part 2 level 2 than I did in the entire playthrough of Final Fantasy VI. Yet, I say that Final Fantasy VI is a better game. Why? I'm not sure. FFVI is a masterfully crafted story with fantastic characters and moments, but the overall fun level throughout is quite low for me. Space Channel 5 feels like someone filled a gigantic syringe with FUN and slammed it into a large vein in my forhead. Perhaps a Miyamoto quote is relevent here:

I personally have a fundamental dislike of the RPG system. I think that in RPGs, you are completely bound hand and foot and can't move. Only gradually, as your character gains powers, do you become able to move your hands, your feet... you come untied slowly. And in the end, you feel powerful. So what you can get out of an RPG is a feeling of happiness, but I don't think that is a game that is fundamentally fun to play. But, with Mario's games, if you're not good at them you may never get good. Anyone can become really good at an RPG, though, and if you still want to play a Mario title... in those cases it's a good system. There are many people who like it, and there are certain types of games for which the system is perfectly suited. The RPG system works best for games with lots of dialogue, to help bring about a writer's voice, to bring a book to life.

End Miyamoto-san quote. I think the last phrase reveals what kind of love I have for Final Fantasy VI - the same love that I have for books. But not the same love that I have for games. The small level of interactivity (although the story is still strictly linear) just serves to make it feel more like my story.

A few questions remain unanswered in this strange, pondering post. Why does my fondness for Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars seem different still. Perhaps it stems from a nostalgia, considering it was the first RPG I really played. Perhaps it comes from the many Mario-esque elements fused onto the traditional RPG mold. Perhaps not. There were other questions, too, but I forgot them.

What I really hope is that they make another Space Channel 5. This world has too many Fantasies that tie you down, and not nearly enough that let you dance.

I just can't help but think how funny it would be if this turned out to be Mario Party 7 with a dance pad peripheral.  Nintendo has let us down again!  But that probably won't happen.  Hey, is this the first dancing game for GC?

No.  There is the Mc Groovz Dance game for GCN, but's its not DDR.

I have a terrible fear that this game will not make it stateside.  I think we should start an online petition to make sure that this game is released in the US.  Only, someone else has to get it started, because I am too lazy and I wouldn't know how to go about starting an online petition anyway.  So, somebody get to it!  Don't let DDR with Mario suffer the same fate as Nintendo Puzzle Collection!

They better release it here or I will scream. Actually, my brothers got a PS2 and I only use it to play DDR Extreme (whcih I'm better at it than I thought I would be, but only up to light). We'll finally see how Mario gets his groove on.

Hmmm...interesting that the pad has A, B, Start and Z buttons, but no X, Y, L or R.  L and R would be hard to implement, because they are analog buttons, but why not X and Y?  There's plenty of room for them at the bottom of the pad...they would just have to move the warning messages that no one ever reads to the back of the pad.  Oh well.

Do you suppose that the direction arrows correspond to the analog stick directions or to the D-Pad directions?  I would guess that the arrows correspond to the D-Pad, since the D-Pad is already digital, but I hope that the arrows correspond to the analog stick.  That way, you could use the pad to play other GameCube games!  Smash Smash Revolution, anyone?  Even without the X, Y, L, R, and D-Up buttons, playing SSBM on a DDR pad would be crazily fun.

IGN has two new DDR w/ Mario videos.

The Japanese pads look cheap.  I hope there is a way to use my PS2 Red Octane style DDR pads on the Cube.

A friend of mine thinks it is a stupid idea, for some reason.

He is a Nintendo fan, but he thinks the regular DDR is better.

Well, you could always use one of those PS2/GameCube control adaptors.  Presumably there'd be no problem, as all you'd need would be the directions.

In my experience, playing non-DDR games with dance pads always turns out way more stupid than it seems at first.

I can't imagine the song selection being much better than Donkey Konga.

I hope that, since this game is being made by Nintendo AND Konami, rather than just Nintendo, Konami will knock some sense into Nintendo and put some good songs into the game.  And a large number of songs, and a wide difficulty range.  And some good features, too, such as a dance move editor, an endless/exercise mode, etc.  The PS2 versions got all of these features, and there's no reason why the GC version shouldn't, also.  But I fear that Nintendo may count on Mario's presense in the game to sell the game, and thus not put any decent production value into the game.  This may be the only DDR game ever to grace the GameCube, so they had better do it right!

« Reply #27 on: January 23, 2005, 03:58:05 PM »
1. I have utmost faith in Konami. They successfully made DDR Disney Mix very cool, which could have been very lame. The songlist for the PS2 Extreme seemed very lame. Then I played it, and Konami had once again made that songlist into something very cool. DDR with Mario will be very cool.

2. The drum game for PS2 that Namco made that controlled almost exactly like Donkey Konga was filled with a cool DDR-style songlist. Funny how that worked.

3. Once an official dance pad is actually out for GCN, I have a feeling that all future DDR versions (non-Mario) will come out for Cube too.

Will it have "The Cube"?

DDR lives on past Extreme.  Will future arcade versions come out?  Those were just rumors, right?

I actually not a fan of dance music, but DRR is so much more than just listening to music.  Are there any other dance pad games besides DDR?

I haven't heard any Mario/Nintendo music in DDR with Mario.  Is/will there be any?  I hope so.  It would also be cool if they added Mario/Nintendo sounds for the different dance pad buttons like they did in Donkey Konga.

The only DDR game I have is Extreme.  When I bought it I thought it had We Will Rock you in it, but it doesn't (that I found).  Do any of the DDR versions have rock or nondance songs?

I watched the vids on IGN, and there is definitely Mario music in the game.  That's sort or the whole point, isn't it?  One of the four videos had a (quite good, thankfully) remix of the music from Super Mario Brothers 2 (the same tune that's in SSBM).  According to IGN, the game also features some rendition of the original Super Mario Brothers theme, but I didn't recognize it in any of the videos.  One of the videos had a (not so good, unfortunately) version of Bizet's Les Toreadors part I from Carmen, and another had a decent version of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, so the game won't feature only Nintendo music.  I happy about that, because as much as I love Nintendo music, I also appreciate variety.

I know of one other dance game for GameCube.  It is called MC Groovz danceCraze, it features a dance pad, and it is currently released in the US.  However, it was published by MadCatz, a company that has never made software before (to the best of my knowledge) and is notorious for making poor quality hardware.  Somehow I'm guessing MC Groovz isn't all that hot.  IGN hasn't even bothered to review it.

If this awesomely awesome game does come to America I look forward to seeing what kind of commercial they make for it.  Maybe people in big Mario costumes dancing down the street? Plumbers dancing in houses?  Whatever it is it will be hilarious x 50.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts.  But I think we can all agree that Mario rules and that''s a fact!
