I'd just like to say that I had roughly 8,632 times the amount of fun playing Space Channel 5 Part 2 level 2 than I did in the entire playthrough of Final Fantasy VI. Yet, I say that Final Fantasy VI is a better game. Why? I'm not sure. FFVI is a masterfully crafted story with fantastic characters and moments, but the overall fun level throughout is quite low for me. Space Channel 5 feels like someone filled a gigantic syringe with FUN and slammed it into a large vein in my forhead. Perhaps a Miyamoto quote is relevent here:
I personally have a fundamental dislike of the RPG system. I think that in RPGs, you are completely bound hand and foot and can't move. Only gradually, as your character gains powers, do you become able to move your hands, your feet... you come untied slowly. And in the end, you feel powerful. So what you can get out of an RPG is a feeling of happiness, but I don't think that is a game that is fundamentally fun to play. But, with Mario's games, if you're not good at them you may never get good. Anyone can become really good at an RPG, though, and if you still want to play a Mario title... in those cases it's a good system. There are many people who like it, and there are certain types of games for which the system is perfectly suited. The RPG system works best for games with lots of dialogue, to help bring about a writer's voice, to bring a book to life.
End Miyamoto-san quote. I think the last phrase reveals what kind of love I have for Final Fantasy VI - the same love that I have for books. But not the same love that I have for games. The small level of interactivity (although the story is still strictly linear) just serves to make it feel more like my story.
A few questions remain unanswered in this strange, pondering post. Why does my fondness for Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars seem different still. Perhaps it stems from a nostalgia, considering it was the first RPG I really played. Perhaps it comes from the many Mario-esque elements fused onto the traditional RPG mold. Perhaps not. There were other questions, too, but I forgot them.
What I really hope is that they make another Space Channel 5. This world has too many Fantasies that tie you down, and not nearly enough that let you dance.
