HELP in World 8- 2 Super Mario Bros

Can someone please help me in the original super mario bros in world 8 level 2?  Towards the end of the game, there`s this huge leap that seems impossible to jump over, even when you back up all the way, hold down B, run as fast as you can, and jump at the last second.  I always seem to fall short and waste 8 lives trying to pass this part. Is there a trick to getting through to the next round??

There are two separated blocks. Stand on the very tip of the first one, run, and if you were far enough on the tip, you will run over the little pit, and get enough speed to jump over the pit. That will be $5 sir (just kidding lol).

Haha, thanks you guys! Both tips helped and I finally passed 8-2... but now I`m trying to get through 8-3! I`ll keep trying! ;]
