Somebody went through the trouble of quantifying just how well the myraid of ways to race in Mario Kart Wii--both in mode of transportation and control--stack up against each other!

Shocking... Granted, this probably wasn't the most scientific test in the world, but still...

Small differences, but not surprising to me. First of all, I bet many of us are used to the GameCube controller, and it seems you can make turns a little quicker that way (slam stick in one direction and the effect's instantaneous). Wheel's more realistic but there might be slight lag moving it completely in one direction. Wii Remote I never expected to work well, since pointing a wand doesn't make sense for steering (I've never played Mario Kart Wii, but I assume that's how the remote works in that game).

As for the nunchuk getting the best time for bike... well, the times are very similar to that of the GameCube controller, which makes sense since the nunchuk too has a control stick on it.

So again, no surprise.

It seems like Nintendo is having trouble moving on from the GCN controller (not that that's a bad thing).

Seriously now, for games that really need a standard control interface, what else are you going to do?
That was a joke.

Well, the Wii Wheel is all about realism... when was the last time anybody completed a lap around a course full of bottomless pits and monsters in a real go-kart in under two minutes?

Video games don't need realism.  Video games are about escaping the real world (at least for me).

Honestly, I prefer the GCN controller because it's more precise. The Wii Wheel is fun to use but it's harder to narrow turns.
<Kojinka> When I saw this thread back on top, I was afraid this was gonna be another pointless bump by a new member, but when I saw Super-Jesse's username, my fears were laid to rest.

Which explains why the courses were widened.

You can throw items in front and behind with the wheel.  Can you do that easily with the other control methods?  I've only play a couple of cups with the wheel and haven't tried any other control scheme, but I assume you can tap the control stick forward or back while releasing the item to throw in front or behind, but that method might make some people steer incorrectly.

Er, didn't Mario Kart 64 give you the ability to throw weapons forwards or backwards? Yes it did (bananas, shells, etc.). Maybe Super Mario Kart did too. A little bit of training and you won't go careening into a wall trying to press forward or back on the control stick. So that theory's out the window. I'm not sure how you could do the same thing with the wheel unless it detects you tilting the wheel forward or back, but that just seems strange. I don't think you'd pull the wheel back before throwing an item behind you.

You do it with the wheel by pressing the digital pad.  I think the GCN controller will probably be more precious, but the wheel is pretty fun.  Not as much fun as Excite Truck IMO, but still cool.  I'll probably try the GCN Wavebird later to unlock stuff.

Hm, I really think people who religiously choose the GCN controller over any type of Wiimote variation should REALLY give them a try for awhile, instead of just immediately reaching for the GCN controller.

Dunno, it just reminds me of right-wing folk who're just afraid of change. It irks me.

I've found the Wii Wheel to be a bit clunky first, and did consider switching to my Wavebird, but eventually I got the hang of it. Feels comfortable in my hand.

Super Mario Kart didn't have the option to throw stuff backwards (or drag). MK64 and MKSC do, but for some reason I almost thought MKDS left out the option to drop shells/toss stuff behind you. If they actually left it off a control scheme in MKWii that would be really weird.

I am conservative politically and prefer the GCN controller... but what's interesting is, aren't we supposed to be intolerant or something? I don't care how anyone else controls their games or what games they play. It seems a little odd to be bothered by someone else's gaming preferances when it has no effect on your enjoyment. I don't get it. See, that's the thing about "left-wingers"... if you dissaprove of someone's stances on something important like morality or life then you're a bigot. But feel free to dislike someone for wearing different clothes, or enjoying a different control scheme. That's just peachy!

By the way, I'm just teasing back. I don't really care.

I enjoy the controller, but I will try the wheel.

I discriminate against people who discriminate against people who discriminate against people who discriminate against control schemes other than the GCN controller, Crazee. If someone wants to hate someone for not choosing the controller they want them to choose, that's their choice!

They totally are.

I even hacked my PC so I could use GCN controllers with games like StarCraft and World of Warcraft.

How in the name of God did political affiliation get linked to one's appreciation of a GCN controller.

Also, Wii Wheel all the way for me! (if I like it... haven't tried yet)

I will likely use my GC controllers, but I do have a problem: My GC controllers seem to be dying. There's an orange one that was my main controller, but suddenly the characters in all of my games are moving to the right when I hold the stick in the normal position.

I've since unplugged that controller and use just the standard black one. Does anyone know how to fix GC controllers (The left joystick is coming loose..)

It didn't, I just think people who opt for the GCN controllers either

1. Really didn't give the Wiimote + whatever configuration a try
and/or
2. Fear that the Wiimote just isn't equipped for playing a game such as this

I was just comparing the the two points to the fact that most right-wing folk fear and/or detest change.

I think what Vid is denouncing is the people that resist change and the Blue Ocean strategy of Nintendo. I didn't gather that idea from a psuedo-scientific experiment, especially since it seemed that the Wiimote/nunchuck variation faired quite well.

The Wii Wheel, to me, is fun to use, but I can't get down turning and it tries too hard to be precise, if that makes sense?

To each their own, but it's good ol' GC controller for me :-P

While the two-choice description is extremely lacking, I don't think that's entirely the case right now (last point).

Now, I'll most likely fall back to using the GCN controller, but I look forward to trying the Wiimote by itself (or Wii Wheel). I managed to get an excellent degree of accuracy from tilting the Wiimote back when I played Excite Truck.

No, I actually LIKE the Wii and its games, that's why I'm defending the Wiimote, rather than complaining about it. XP

(Yes, I'm aware you're for the Wiimote + Wheel configuration, I just meant in general)

And Chup ALWAYS adds stuff like this to posts of mine when he doesn't agree. I just say tl;dr in my head (regardless of how long his post actually is) and skip his posts now.

I love the Wii Wheel. Even though I love Mario Kart in general, I got Mario Kart Wii for this very reason. I do agree with Vid, I think that people who are accustomed to the GCN controller ought to give the Wii Wheel a try. Sure, you may not be a pro right away, but the fun is in gaining experience with a new form of control.

I'm to scared to try the Gamecube controller (It looks way different than in DD), so I'm sticking with the Classic Controller.

Also, when I found out you couldn't drag items with the Wii Wheel, I went "Bah, stupid DD engine!", until I tried the Classic Controller.

you can drag items with the wii wheel. Just hold left once you've gotten an item

I tried the Remote + Nunchuk scheme for the first time yesterday, and I'm not sure why I'd waited so long. It's just like the GameCube Controller, but less confining and without the D-Pad, but anything you wanted to do with the D-Pad, you can do shaking the remote. And that means you don't have to take your thumb off the stick. It's also better if you're too used to Double Dash... no X and Y buttons to not do what they used to do. Also, pointing at the menu screen. Remote + Nunchuk rocks.

...And yeah, that goes with this chart, as well. I like bikes.
