I have downloaded a load of genie codes for Super Mario Bros. But what are genie codes and how do I use them?

I assume that you mean "Game Genie" codes.  Game Genie was a peripheral device for the NES and a few other systems that let you cheat in games in various ways, much like the latter GameShark and Action Replay devices.  If you're playing on an NES and don't have a Game Genie device, you can't use the codes.  If you have a Game Genie, just plug the game cartridge into the Game Genie and plug the Game Genie into the NES.  Then power up the system and enter up to three lines of codes.

Oh, hello Mr. Bond! I've seen your movies, and I really love them! I think you need to stop getting all the girls and leave some for the fishes, or, I mean, fish. Anyway, your movies are getting a little repetitive so it would be good if you could work on some more original stuff. Thanks and I'm a die-hard fan of you!
