Video Game Chat / Video Game Christmas Album
« on: December 12, 2011, 01:56:15 AM »
So I've had this idea knocking around in my head for a few years now and just have never gotten around to actually doing anything about it until last year:

A Christmas album of video game music! So many games have wintry levels (some of which are even Christmas themed!) and a lot of times the music is AMAZING. I think this makes for some great festive listening and is a sanity-restoring alternative to hearing Jingle Bell Rock for the 40,000th time.

Last year I put together a 50+ track album, including music from Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Sonic, Pokemon and other huge series, along with tracks from smaller games like the NES classic DuckTales and the only game to ever come close to out-Mario Karting Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing.  This year I put together a 14-track expansion (DLC Pack 1: Mario's Mistletoe) including music from classic titles like Mega Man 6 and Super Ghouls'n Ghosts, up through the most recent 3DS blockbusters Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.  You can listen to samples and download the albums here: http://shigeruslist.com/2011/12/11/a-very-nintendork-christmas-marios-mistleto/

Merry Christmas everybody!

Video Game Chat / Holiday Season Video Game Blitzkrieg
« on: November 04, 2011, 10:10:48 AM »
This holiday season is ridiculously full to bursting with like a million awesome games. What are you getting? Are you picking it/them up for yourself, or hoping a loved one/Santa/the Krampus gives it to you as a gift?

Being 3DS-less, I'm super tempted to pick one up for myself just for Super Mario 3D Land, and then maybe throw Mario Kart 7 onto a Christmas list. Or maybe vice versa. BUT realistically, I probably shouldn't pick up expensive new hardware, and am more likely to pick up either Skyrimjob or Skyward Sword, and then ask for the other for Christmas.

That said, Arkham City looks super ****ing sweet, and Saints Row: The Third looks like a blast as well. Batman's got my attention way more though.

Video Game Chat / Stages for Super Smash Bros. 4
« on: August 05, 2011, 11:48:42 AM »
So we have a thread for characters you want in Smash Bros. 4, but it's always been my thought that the stages are just as important (maybe even MORE important?) than the roster of characters.

Plus, a recent play-through of the N64 original (not to mention combing through the Smash Bros. Wiki) has reignited my love of a couple past stages that I'd LOVE to see return, mainly the original SMB 1 Mushroom Kingdom from Smash 64, and Brinstar Depths from Melee.  If we see Past Stages in Smash 4, those are FOR SURE at the top of my want list.

As for new stuff, I've always wanted to see a stage based on the Mother Brain boss fight from the end of Metroid and Super Metroid.  Pools of acid, laser blasters, destructible Zebetite barriers and most importantly, a big, destructible Mother Brain!  In general I'd like to see more destructible environments in Smash 4.

So what do you want?  Any old school stages you'd love to see return?  What are some new concepts for stages you'd like to see explored?

Mario Chat / Wario was cooler when he gave me nightmares

So yeah comparing THAT Wario to today's, it's safe to say our man Wario's undergone a little villain decay (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainDecay).  How do you feel about this?  Villain decay or no, Wario's by far one of my favorite characters, but after beating Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land, I was left yearning for the cackling maniac of yore.

The upside is that he's still a gross, greedy, narcissistic con man, so it's not like the character's been completely changed.  I just miss his villainy/anti-heroics.  The other upside is that this toned-down Wario has not one, but two series (Wario Land and Wario Ware), plus some prestigious guest spots (Mario sports games, all but the first Mario Kart, and finally made into Smash Bros. with Brawl).  I get the feeling that if he was still as scary and possibly evil as he used to be depicted, he probably wouldn't have the appeal to headline two different series.

The downside is that I think this change in tone has led the Wario Land series astray.  A big part of the fun of the first two (and best two, in my opinion) is the atmosphere and character of the games.  You're playing a villain (or at best, anti-hero) and the environments, NPCs, story and gameplay all reflect that.  In the first two Wario Land games Wario is strictly out to steal more treasure or get revenge... usually both.  But in the later games, yeah he's hunting for treasure, and he's only doing good to increase his own wealth, but the scenarios he was plopped into could have fit almost any character.  They felt a lot more generic.  They're still fine games for the most part, but that Wario personality seems to have slipped away a little bit.

Mario Chat / Variable Endings
« on: June 26, 2011, 06:57:55 PM »
So I just finished replaying Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land.  I got (I think) the second best endings on both of them.  Realizing this, I hopped online to see not only what the best ending looked like, but also some of the hilariously bad endings too.  I want to see Luigi's tent, and Wario's birdhouse!  I was a little bummed to see that, as far as I could tell, there weren't any such image galleries on this site.  Anybody else think those type of galleries would make a cool addition to the site?

I love these endings, they're a cool incentive to keep playing or replay the game.  I really dig games that challenge you to dig up as much treasure as possible, and for some reason I really like a game ending with the hard-working protagonist earning a sweet new pad. How do you feel about this type of ending in general?

Mario Chat / Super Mario 64 turns 15 today!
« on: June 23, 2011, 11:46:37 AM »
Happy Birthday, Mario!

One of the most revolutionary and beloved games of all time turns 15 today!  September 29th marks the 15th anniversary of the US release.

So yeah!  Let's reminisce, celebrate, whatever!  I think I'll dig out my old cartridge and goof around the castle a bit after work tonight.  Hopefully my N64 sticks aren't too blown out, and hopefully I don't get too wrapped up in the magic and lose too much sleep.

Ha!  Quake shares it's birthday with Mario 64!  Two hugely important games on the same day!

Mario Chat / Luigi's Mansion 2

http://e3.nintendo.com/games/detail/#/3ds/luigismansion

I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread for this yet.

This is a total dream game for me.  I love-love-loooooooooved the first one, but I never thought we'd be getting a sequel.  Probably because of how much I love the Mario series, and the fact that Ghostbusters is my favorite movie of all time.  Pretty potent combo there.

Glad to hear there'll be multiple "mansions," one of them having an Egyptian theme, complete with mummies!  It'd be cool if a remixed version of the original mansion was in there somewhere, maybe as the first level or an unlockable bonus world.  Hopefully multiple mansions means multiple enemy types.  Ghostbusting of course should be the heart of the game, but seeing already that Luigi is gonna take on mummies, I'd love to see him trap Draculas and Wolfmans and zombies and stuff.  Zombies and animated skeletons would both be pretty funny to suck up with the Poltergust 5000 (body parts flying off and getting sucked up one at a time).

Multiplayer could be awesome as well.  I'm thinking a co-op "horde" mode.  Mario, Luigi, Toad and a Mii (obviously I'd want multiple playable characters) all back to back, suckin' up wave after wave of ghosts and ghouls.

I always liked to think that the original Luigi's Mansion took place at the same time as Mario Sunshine--because I forgot Mario was in LM--but maybe LM 2 can take place at the same time as Super Mario 3DS.  I don't know why, but that little bit of side-by-side continuity would be really cool to me.

I'm very excited about this.  LM2 is a 3DS killer app as far as I'm concerned.

Mario Chat / Mario Kart 3DS Casting Call!
« on: June 03, 2011, 02:24:45 PM »
So I've had Mario Kart on the brain for the last week or so.  Maybe it's because E3 is coming up, where we'll (hopefully) get some more info on MK3DS.  Maybe it's because I had a blast playing with MKWii with my bro-in-law over Memorial Day.  Whatever it is, I want to talk Mario Kart, so I've come back to a board I haven't touched in years.

In this thread, let's talk about which characters you'd like to see come back, which new characters you'd like to see behind the wheel, and which characters you want left in the dust.

I love how much the character roster has grown over the years.  I've been playing Mario Kart games since the first one came out waaaay back in 1992, and I've been in love since.  The first few games stuck with 8 characters, but that roster has blossomed a TON, and it's always exciting to see new faces and returning favorites.

Let's use MKWii's cast as a base.  From there I'd...

Subtract the babies.  All the babies  God I hate the babies.  Babies can't drive cars.  What are they doing here?  Did Mario and Luigi start families?  Did the babies time travel?  Who changes their [dukar]ty diapers?

Add Kamek Kamek rules, and came thiiiiis close to being in MK64.  It bummed me out when I heard about this, just because HOW many MK games have come and gone since 64, and he STILL hasn't been in one?  Come on Nintendo!

Maybe add Hammer Bro There's beta data in MKWii that suggests the Hammer Bro may have been considered as a playable character.  I say bring 'im on!  They are one of my favorite baddies, and I feel like they're getting kind of rare over the years.  Though with Koopa Troopa and Kamek already (hopefully) in the mix, he may be kind of redundant.  Koopa Troopa gets a free pass because he's a classic (and was MIA for SO long)

Add The Koopa Kids Love these little brats.  Maybe not all 7, but maybe four of them, to fill the void left by the stupid, stupid babies.  OR  maybe there can be two or three "clusters" of Koopa Kids... a bunch of the little monsters pile onto one kart, refusing to wear seatbelts or follow any kind of safety regulations, jeering at other karts as they pass.  Yeah, I like that.

I'll have more on this later, but what about you?  Who do YOU want?

Mario Chat / Happy Mario Day everyone!
« on: March 10, 2009, 10:10:28 PM »
I know it's a little late, but yesterday, March 10th, was Mario Day!  Why?  Because it's March 10th!  You know, Mar. 10th!  You know, Mar.10!  You know, Mar10!  You know, Mario!

Sorry, that's just the best way I know (through text) to explain where Mario Day comes from.  Did you do anything special to celebrate?

I re-discovered Mario Kart Wii, and the fact that I think it's my favorite entry in the series.  Later tonight, I'm going to spend some quality time with Mario Galaxy, though somewhat ironically, I'll be playing as Luigi... but hey, his last name is Mario!

This little shindig has certainly rekindled my love of the Mario universe, all the wacky characters and fun adventures I've grown up loving.  It just creates such a warm fuzzy feeling in my soul.  Sure, I might spend more of my gaming time on my 360 nowadays, but nothing can replace that Nintendo magic, of which Mario is the master wizard.

Mario Chat / Is R.O.B. officially part of the Mario gang?
« on: March 16, 2007, 12:05:32 AM »
So now that everyone's favorite Robotic Operating Buddy is a driver in Mario Kart DS, does anyone think we'll see him in future Mario titles?  Do you want him in future Mario titles?

I hope so... I love R.O.B. and I'd love to see him stick his adorable robotic head into the next Mario Party or Kart or Sports.  He's a helluva lot cooler than Daisy, Waluigi or Bowser Jr., that's for sure, and since I doubt Nintendo will make R.O.B. 2.0 for the Wii, I want him to live on in gaming somehow.  I'm very curious as to what kind of roles the little robot will have in the future (in Mario and non-Mario games).

On the flip side though, I can see how some would see him as not "really" a Mario character.  He started as a peripheral for the NES, he's made cameos in F-Zero GX and the box art of Viewtiful Joe.  Anybody not want to see him in more Mario games?

Mario Chat / Super Mario: Blue Twilight DX
« on: August 02, 2006, 12:13:09 AM »
Is a cool fan-made Mario sidescroller.  It incorporates a lot of stuff from all over the Mario spectrum (wallkicks, rabbit ears, Kamek) and has a cool theme that makes it feel like "Mario does Castlevania" (or Super Ghouls'n'Ghosts), which is why it was originally known as MarioWeen.

The game controls well, is pretty fun (if a little short and imperfect) and has a really surprising number of unlockables.  I'm three levels into it, and kind of love it.

You can download it here: http://www.marioween.tk/

If everybody already knew about this, I guess just lock this, if not, enjoy!

EDIT: Hmm... apparently I can't post pics of the game.  Bummer. :(

Mario Chat / Dream-casting for the next Mario RPG
« on: June 22, 2006, 08:10:23 PM »
Let's say Nintendo called you up and told you about their next Mario RPG.  They tell you that obviously it will star Mario, but it will have a multi-party member system ala the original Super Mario RPG.   But they're totally stumped on what four characters to make party members.  They also aren't sure who they want for the main villain and his/her/its sidekick.  They also need a good basic premise for the story.

Who and what would you pick?  Would you cast characters from previous games, or new ones that you created?

I know for a fact that I'd want Luigi and Yoshi as party members... and I'd definitely cast either Tatanga or Wario as the villain, but after that I'm not sure.  I think I'd want a couple new guys for party members... perhaps a new female character with a drastically un-Peach personality.

Who would you cast?
