People have gone on about how Luigi is playable in Super Mario 64, and how he should be in every game. I've always wondered "Why is Luigi wanted so much". All he is is green with a different head shape (not even that in some cases). Even I, someone who wants Luigi so badly, do not know why I want to play as him. Is it just that red has gotten boring and green is somehow exciting? Maybe it is how tall he is, or the L on his cap?
What is it in your opinion?
-
At first I thought this was an intriguing question probing into the depths of mankind's soul. Then I thought, why do you need a reason to like playing as Luigi?
-
Dang, this is actually a good question. I can see why someone would want to be Wario (he's way different than Mario) but Luigi is almost a Mario clone. Meh, I guess I like Luigi because he's green and not red. He also acts a bit different than Mario; Mario is kind and heroic while Luigi is kind and cowardly.
-
I think it's because people are tired of playing as the fat red plumber. They've played as him too many times and Luigi, about 7. Mario Kart series, Smash Bros series, Mario is Missing, and Luigi's Mansion.
-
Well, he was a game breaker in both SMB2(USA) and in SM64DS where his jump is something to behold.
He also seems more flawed than his brother, and that makes a character enduring.
Maybe alot of people had older sibling, so they were stuck being Player No.2.
But, while I like Mario the best, He is never cooler than when Luigi's there besides him.
-
To me, Luigi is more then a color swap of Mario. Luigi has diffrent emotions and feelings then Mario. (As in cowardly, clumsy, strange relationships with ghosts)

I wish there was a way to play SMB Lost Levels as Luigi on Wii without losing the Mario file my wife likes to play because Mario doesn't slip as much after jumping. I prefer Luigi because he jumps higher. Hmm. Maybe I can reset, play as Luigi, and then simply not exit to the Wii menu. Would that work?
-
Luigi just plain has more personality than Mario and, like Boo Dudley already said, his jumping skills are godly.
I don't care if some ladies adore round things. I'm not one of them.
-
L'son, I think resetting kills your save file. I could be wrong though.

I'm somewhat surprised so many people favor Luigi. I thought it was just a quirk of my own. I like Luigi's fighting style, and how he's much lighter than Mario.
Quote from ME sometime after that
It's all coming clearer now. Now I'm starting to see why people favor Luigi so much. They think it's different. Everyone wants to be different. But it's ridicules. If I had a nickel for the number of times I've seen someone say that Luigi could "PWN!" Mario or something like that, then I'd have like, 2$ (I'm talking about the Nsider forums mostly). Anyway, the point is, Luigi is overrated.
-
It's because he's tantalizing: Playable in one or two games, a cameo perhaps in ones he's not... it's human nature to be curious about things people don't or won't let us see or do--think of him as a green-capped Pandora's box without all the pain and suffering.
-
I actually like seeing Mario and Luigi work together, in such games as the Mario and Luigi series and Super Paper Mario. It's cool to see cooperation between the two, and their interactions together are much more interesting than either alone.
-
I've always just assumed that Luigi was behind the scenes somewhere, helping Mario (even in the games that didn't have a player two option).
It'd be great to see them working together in outside of the M&L or PM games (and the spinoff games, of course).
-
I love it when the Bros. work together for a common goal as well. I remember when Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga was first announced. I was like "Whoooooooaaaaaaa.... cool."
I'm pretty excited about what his role will be in Galaxy... there has to be something better over which to drain your second Wii Remote's batteries than pointing at things. But of course I'd have to go out and buy another Nunchuk. I guess Christmas isn't so far away from Galaxy's release date, and I don't have anything in mind for a list (since I'm in the habit of buying my games immediately).
-
I thought there was already an answer to Luigi's popularity, and that I was one of the only ones that didn't know, but when I found this thread... well I'm glad to see that I'm not alone. In all honesty, I don't really have a preference to either brother. I agree that they are the coolest when working together. One of my reasons for liking Luigi is because we have a little bit in common: I'm not as outgoing as my shorter, older sister, and when I was a kid, my favorite color was green. I guess I also like how Luigi seems to have more personality than his brother.
-
Just to clear up a common misconception. I don't hate Mario. I just like Luigi a bit more. And of course it's great to see them work together. Afterall, it wouldn't be the Mario Brothers when there's just one.
-
Nobody likes both of them. They either like one or the other.
-
Seriously now. Did you just say that no one likes both? I beg to differ. Mario and Luigi both have high standings on the...
BriGuy92 Coolness Scale!!!
Mario: | - - - - - - - [] - - | 8/10
Luigi: | - - - - - - - - [] - | 9/10
True, Luigi may have a higher rating, but I still like Mario, right?
-
Speak for yourself, Corleone.
They're both 10s on my scale. Well, Luigi has the candy cane socks so he may be a 10.2 at most. Maybe Mario has green-striped socks. That'd bring him to a 10.2 as well.
I use one just as much as the other in Mario Kart. After Yoshi and Toad.
-
I want Luigi playable because I prefer jumping ability to grip and speed. Grip was always what I upgraded last in Star Wars Episode One Racers, although that's not really related.
Luigi also resembles me more, in shape and in his "working behind the scenes" deal... Sounds like I'm just quoting my responses to the many "Mario vs. Luigi" threads.
-
I can barely play SMB2J with Luigi.
-
On Melee, I prefer Luigi. His high attack makes up for his poor traction.
-
I don't really mind which Mario Brother i play as. Just as long as I don't have to play as Waluigi!
-
My boyfriend claims to like them evenly, but he leans more toward Mario. But hey, it's no big deal when we play multi-player.
-

Too true
-

Waluigi is awesome! Mainly because he's so underappreciated.
-

...Waluigi isn't even a Mario brother.
-

He's a Wario brother.
-

I doubt he'll ever have a major Mario game where he is playable.
-
Waluigi is not awesome. He is a filler character with no substance. Or character.
-
Now that the chain is over, I'll have to agree. Just a pewter piece on the boards of Mario Party... no destiny, no particular defining traits, nothing. And it's probably best that way...
I stand by the equality of Mario Bros., still. Awesome radiates from the Mario & Luigi promotional art with both standing side by side. Even though I am a total Luigi n00b in Melee.
-
Waluigi has some particular defining traits - he is the tallest and skinniest, always has the best and weirdest celebratory moves.
The sports games treat Waluigi better than Mario Party, that is true.
-
As for Waluigi..... Seeing as Wario plays Mario's opposite, I feel he works much better as a stand alone character.
-
Why do we want Luigi? I'll quote from the Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga manual: "He's lean, he's not that mean, and his clothes are forest green!"
I do think that Waluigi needs his own game to develop his character more. He's pretty bland now, but I think Nintendo could make give him soem personality, and then he would make the "main characters" list.
-
"He's lean, he's not that mean, and his clothes are forest green!"
Um...I could've sworn that that quote is actually from Double Dash's manual, not Superstar Saga's.
-
Close, but the quote in the MK:DD!! manual is, "He's lean, he's not so mean, and his Fireballs are green! Everybody's favorite brother is here, too!"
-
Cripes. Well, I don't actually have MK:DD!! so I can't check that. I am looking at the M&L:SS manual right now and don't see anything of the sort.
Either way, this Luigi fangirl extraordinaire sure feels stupid right about now...
-
I've seen someone who hacked SM64 and replaced the Mario sprite with Luigi, but I think it's a hoax. This is an interesting question. To me, playing Luigi in SM64 is pointless.
-

Why is that? You were correct. The quote is in the Double Dash manual and if it were in the Superstar Saga manual it would be in a very odd place (I looked at the characters page and it was not there).
-
Whoops. I guess my mind's just been really mucked up lately. More so than usual anyway. It's really annoying.
-

Mario is not a sprite in SM64. You have to hack the colors, textures, and edit the polygons to shape his head like Luigi.
-
It isn't? I've always remembered the phrase "his clothes are forest green", and associated that with a picture of Luigi in the SS maual. Guess I was wrong.
-
Im a Luigi Fangirl too! :] High Fives N64 Chick!! 8D
And actually, it wasn't forest green...nor talking about his clothes.
"He's lean, he's not so mean, his fireballs are green! Everyone's favorite Brother is here too"
:]
-
...Wow. I guess I'm just crazy.
-
I'm bored with mario mario mario Mario everywhere. Also, Luigi is very smilliar to me :)
-
You know, that is something that bugs me. Mario is "perfect" and therefore boring. Sometimes it's the little imperfections that characters have (being afraid of ghosts would be a fine example) that make them shine.

We want Luigi so we can hone his awesome powers!
-
Ok, that's just plain scary. Where did that come from?

All the dang poops just annoy me. I can't search for anything Mario-related on YouTube without having to wade through a flood of that stuff.

Yes, I totally agree. I think YouTube poop is annoying, unfunny and difficult to navigate through when searching for something worthwhile (no offense to people who enjoy poop).

Yeah, we're trying to reduce the amount of poops made that involve Mario and CD-i.
-
People want to play multiplayer with 1 character Mario and the other as Luigi.
I wish they would do 4 player once and have Yoshi/DK/Toad as other options.
