Title: Pros and Cons of Having a Clone
Post by: BP on May 20, 2006, 11:17:58 PM
First off, I DON'T want this to turn into an argument about whether or not it's ethical to use science this way. I personally don't know what side I'm on with cloning. This is about what you would do if you had a clone, an exact copy of you. I think it'd be more fun than a problem.

Pros:
You'd always have a person to play a game with.
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! would go VERY smoothly.
Someone would always be there for you to talk to, even though it's talking to yourself.
You wouldn't be able to get on each other's nerves, since you know what you like and dislike.
Think about it, you could share drinks and toothbrushes... technically, even without a clone you're sharing it with the you of two minutes ago/yesterday.
Card games would be possible to fairly play since the cards are drawn at random.
You'd have half the chores and split the homework (heads odds, tails evens.)
You wouldn't fight over music or TV since you have the same interests.
You could sit by yourself on the bus to keep the freaks away from you.

Cons:
Single-player video games. You COULD take turns, like "You be on the Fungi Forums while I play, we'll switch in an hour..."
Multiplayer games would depend on items to determine who wins.
Going somewhere? "Shotgun!"
You'd always have to have a coin to flip for decisions since rock-paper-scissors would never work.
Any contest would result in a tie. Staring contest, hold your breath, art contest, running (considering that the track is the same), anything.
Since you'd think the same way, you couldn't April Fool yourself.

What kinds of things woul you and you do?

another pro:
You would fight against other people with cunning teamwork

More cons:
You could never make each other laugh.
(s)He could steal your girl/boyfriend
If (s)he turned on you and some little boy wanted to shoot the evil clone, he would have to shoot you both.

Pro: You'd have someone around who would share your exact tastes.  Thinking of seeing of movie that's been getting mixed reviews?  Send your clone!  He'll give you a review perfectly suited to your tastes in movies.
Title: Re: Pros and Cons of Having a Clone
Post by: BP on May 21, 2006, 01:24:27 AM
He'd want to send you, though.

You could take turns.

This being written late at night, expect some interesting ideas.

Pros:
Cover more ground in searches for the car key quicker.
Money can be gained faster.
Being that a clone is not a mirror image of you, he/she could think up some more pros or cons to being around that you wouldn't think of.

Cons:
Be continuously flummoxed in chess.
Get interrupted often.
Flaws become obvious.
A clone obviously will steal whatever you want to wear on any particular day.
A clone will also want to use your DS. And your profile, even if you don't trust him/her with it.

Pros: You'll never get bored talking to your clone, you have identical interests.
You can never be tricked by your clone.

Cons: The clone knows all of your personal details.
You can never trick your clone.
Bills will go up.
You can never blame your clone for something you did, because then you'd be admitting you did it.

Just ask Watoad about this. He has a clone, after all. (http://themushroomkingdom.net/board/index.php?topic=6618.0)

Was that some sort of strange fungi-forum-esque joke, or does Watoad actually have an identical twin?

Cons: The clone knows all of your personal details.
So? They're his personal details too.

Pro: You could do the old swith-a-roo on a teacher
Skip classes while another one doesn't
Homework would get done faster

Con: It would kind of annoying with yourself always around...yourself?
Title: Re: Pros and Cons of Having a Clone

Pro: Half the amount of Homework

Con: Technology isn't quite advanced enough yet to safely and successfully clone a human.

Here's a question:

If you get sick of your clone and kill it, would it be suicide or murder?
Title: Re: Pros and Cons of Having a Clone
Post by: G-Dawg on May 21, 2006, 02:03:17 PM
I think it would be murder. You would be killing someone that's not yourself even if it is a clone. UNLESS, it does everything like you in everyway that it makes it look like that you are in fact killing yourself even though you aren't. URGH! My brains hurts...good question Steve.

Yeah, look at Snake in MGS4, He's only 47 but he looks like a 70 year old.

Clones eventually learn about their existence, and then try to eradicate you. Therfore, clones suck.

Would I be weird if I said it'd be awesome if you could make out with a clone of yourself? The clone wouldn't HAVE to be the same gender...>_>

Hypothetically a guy could make a female clone by copying his X chromosome twice.  But how would a girl make a male clone?  The Y chromosome would have to come from somewhere.

I could clone my pet cat but make it a mecha-gerbil by fusing its robot chromosome with its gerbil DNA! It would be the ULTIMATE LIFEFORM! Hahaha! I would rob banks and even Fort Knox, but no one, I repeat no one could stop me! Bwahahaha!

Until I create my righteous Ninja Hamster, cloned from a robot bandicoot and a hamster. They would have a fight to the death on the little spinny wheel and my ninja hamster would sacrifice himself to kill your gerbil. Then everyone would be sad and square enix would find out about the story. The end result,

Final Fantasy XIII,
Tales of the rodents

Having a clone would suck. You'd have to share birthdays.

The idea of creating a clone of yourself with a different gender for a girlfriend/boyfriend is interesting, but I seriously don't think anyone could tolerate themselves. Couples that are too much alike never work out.
Title: Re: Pros and Cons of Having a Clone
Post by: Insane Steve on May 23, 2006, 02:08:28 PM
To be honest, I think girl me would be quite different from current me.

But we'd hate each other and not want to date. Or like each other and never ask each other out because neither one of us could figure out the other's feelings about them. I don't know.

Not really, if the clone was made on a day other than your birthday, then it will have a different birthday. Duh

Dating a female version of yourself would be incest.

Regarding birthdays: one pro of having a clone would be that you would always know the perfect gift to give them, and you'd always get a perfect gift from them.  You'd never really be surprised, though.

Eww that would be like making out with an identical twin!!!Also, a clone will start as a baby, so you would have to wait, like 18 years to date them, and would they even physically attract you? Are any of you so sick that you could think yourself as a different gender was hot? If you do, then you are disgusting and you need an evil gerbil to rip your intestines out and chew on them!

Dude, I was not talking about actual clones. I was talking about clones like in that episode of The Simpsons, when Homer makes numerous clones of himself. Or like in the movie The 6th Day.

You're also taking my post too seriously. This is the FF, almost no posts here are 100% genuine.

Besides, anyone who dates people because they're "hot" is stupid. The clone of me would obviously have the same interests as I would, and that's why people should REALLY date, because they have stuff in common. Not because they look great.

I don't understand. I think I'm hot, and I'm my own gender. That isn't sick. It seems like it would be less sick if I thought someone (me) of the opposite gender was hot.

Actually, I find myself pretty hot. Once, I called 911 thinking there was a dangerously handsome man in my house, but it was just me.

And by the way...
Until I create my righteous Ninja Hamster, cloned from a robot bandicoot and a hamster. They would have a fight to the death on the little spinny wheel and my ninja hamster would sacrifice himself to kill your gerbil. Then everyone would be sad and square enix would find out about the story.
Assuming I don't summon Pirate Ninja Gerbamster!

well that's okay but a clone of you is another person, almost like an identical twin. Indentical twins usually don't think the other one is hot...

that's why people should REALLY date, because they have stuff in common. Not because they look great.
You have a point.

I'm pretty hot myself. In fact, I once got expelled from school for bringing two guns and a six pack.

Being twins is about as close as I'll ever come to being cloned, most likely. It isn't bad at all. She's nothing like me. Of course, dating is far, far out of the question. Disgusting to even think about.
Title: Re: Pros and Cons of Having a Clone

Wow, didn't know you were a twin. Well, you practically are already a clone!
Title: Re: Pros and Cons of Having a Clone
Post by: SolidShroom on May 24, 2006, 07:37:43 PM
I learned that all identical twins (twins that started as one person but split into two) are clones, but not all clones are twins. Also fraternal twins (made in two different eggs), aren't twins really. They are normal siblings, but the same age and with the same birthday. Those are the only other similarities.
Title: Re: Pros and Cons of Having a Clone
Post by: Glorb on May 25, 2006, 09:06:06 AM
Actually, that's a common misconception. Identical twins are not clones of each other; they may look or even sound identical, but they have different DNA and fingerprints and whatnot. It's impossible for the same person to have literally identical DNA or fingerprints, unless of course they really are genetic clones. All this I learned from the Sci-Fi channel. Yay Sci-Fi! But their movies suck...
*shudder* Boa vs. Python...

No they have the same DNA. I just did this in Science class. However they don't have the same fingerprints, so they are clones.

solidmushroom is right.  Identical twins have the same DNA, but not the same fingerprints.  Clones would probably be the same.
Title: Re: Pros and Cons of Having a Clone
Post by: SolidShroom on May 25, 2006, 07:18:30 PM
Not really. They're called mutations. That would give them different fingerprints.
Title: Re: Pros and Cons of Having a Clone
Post by: Hirocon on May 25, 2006, 08:19:45 PM
It's not mutations that give identical twins different fingerprints; fignerprints details develop randomly in the womb.  source (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a980821.html)
Mutations can cause slight genetic differences between identical twins, but the differences (if any) usually aren't significant.  source (http://www.wonderquest.com/twins-dna.htm)
Just for fun: identical twins have unique iris patterns.  source (http://et.wcu.edu/aidc/BioWebPages/Biometrics_Eye.html)

So, let's see...identical twins have the same DNA, yet they have different fingerprints and iris patterns. I'm telling you, they...oh, never mind.
