Mario Chat / Re: ShyGuys Vs. The Goombas

Wow!  It's been ages since I heard anything about the Eight Bits!  I always wondered exactly who the Bits were... Like, if each bit stood for a breed of SMB2 baddie, like Snifits and Tweeters and Pidgits and such...  Anyway, I also remembered that Shyguys have an edge because their secret weapon lies beneath that mask.  Oh!  What horrors could those little masks conceal?!

Mario Chat / Re: Toad's gender
« on: June 25, 2000, 02:01:39 PM »
Okay, let's say Toad is just a short male-seeming shroom with an effeminate voice.  And Yoshi is a mostly male dinosaur who just happens to lay eggs.  And Birdo used to be gender-confused, but that's behind her now.  And Bowser just hatched all seven Koopalings on his own.  It makes me think.  There's a helluva lotta characters in the Mario universe who display androgynous traits.  Wierd...

Birdo is a pink Yoshi-ish egg-spitting boss in SMB 2.  Originally, Birdo was a boy who thinks he's a girl, but Birdo's just female now.

Waruigi's first appearance is Mario Tennis on the N64.  He's the same relation to Luigi as Wario is to Mario: evil twin (or possibly longlost cousin).  He looks like luigi in purple overalls and with a Wario-like nose and moustache.

Geno is the a messenger from the Star Road in Super Mario RPG.  He's a spirit who possesses a little boys doll, named Geno.  Geno looks like Pinnochio.

Wart is a big fat toad (not a _Toad_, just an ordinary toad) who takes control of Subcon, the land of dreams in SMB2.  Not a whole lot unlike Bowser, Wart spits bubbles instead of fireballs.

Anyone else?

Mario Chat / Dr. Mario 64

Check out the pictures of the new Dr. Mario game...http://ign64.ign.com/news/30387.html

See the one 4-player screen? One is Dr. Mario, one is Wario... and?  Who is the old man with the beard? And what on earth is   that strange thing on the end?  Ideas?

Mario Chat / Re: Paper Mario: playable characters
« on: June 23, 2000, 06:40:38 PM »
WildMarioGuy: let's all pray the Luigi is playable.

DarkKnight: yes, Wart is not a Miyamoto creation, but Mario fought him at the end of SMB2 nonetheless.  Wart is a Doki Doki character AND a Mario character.  So there!

Hey, Yoster B.  What exactly is the "Mario Universe storyline"?

Yes!  How about that!  Maybe Miyamoto had a thing for Charlie's Angels!

Any Mario fan worth his mushrooms knows about the SMB 2 Confusion....  Anyway, I agree that The Lost Levels is a more challenging game and it's cool that Luigi was playable and all that, but SMB2: the Dream Machine is a neat little game that is fairly charming in its own right.  It is fun, original, imaginative, and---hey!  Luigi's playable there, too!  Yeah, Americans got dissed, but that was HOW many years ago?  I think Nintendo has a lot more respect for American gamers now, and Japanese companies are rarely stupid enough to not release a game on our shores just because it is difficult.

Mario Chat / Re: Arrghh.... What is it?

Actually, I think it's "Ti Amo," which is Italian for "I love you."  Italian makes more sense, because Mario and Luigi are Italian, and I can really only hear three syllables...  Either that or it some garbled form of "the apples."

I don't think the problem is video gamnes portraying females in a helpless light.  It's society--both Japanese and American--that disempowers women through these stereotypes.  These games are only a reflection of the attitudes of the people who create them... But it would great place to start, though!

In fact, it may already be changing!  look at RPG characters already.  In almost any game, females are integral to the plot, and help in fights just like guys.  Final Fantasy Tactics is probably the best example of this: soliders' gender was completely unimportant to their fighting ability.

Anyway, Peach, too has proven her worth to the feminine cause, and people shouldn't get down on her. Look, she rules a kingdom by herself, she manages to cope with the constant threats of the Koopas, and did you notice she's a career woman?  She hasn't married Mario!  All this and she manages to keep her hair all nice all the time... EVen when she's drving a go-kart... So that's my two cents.  Actually, it was probably more like three and a half, but...

Logically, Shyguys would win because they have the appendages necessary to operate heavy artillery, if such weapons exist in the Mushroom Kingdom... and I'd like to think they do.  Anyway, Goombas and Shyguys showed up in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario RPG.

Mushroom Retainers are both male and female.  In Super Mario RPG, we clearly meet lady Shrooms like Raini and Gaz's Mom and Grandma Toadstool.  Birdo's name is Catherine?  This is news. I thought Birdo was a boy who thinks he's a girl and likes to be called "Birdetta."

Everyone else seems to have forgotten about this post, but I thought of two more ladies... In Wario's Woods for the NES there is Sarissa, a cute little witch, and Aquaela, a pink-haired mermaid.  They're opponents for Wario.  _Now_ this list is complete.

Mega 2's list sounds awesome... except I'd knock out Mario is Missing, Yoshi's Safari, Wario's Woods, and Mario Clash and use the extra memory to improve the graphics of the others.  And what is "Return of the Mario Bros."?  This title has somehow escaped my radar!
