I liked "Pokémon" before it became a "phenomenon."  When I was really in to it, about half the people you'd ask wouldn't know what "Pokémon" was, now that it's (over)popular, I don't like it so much.  It's still good, just "Metroid" or "Mega Turrican" good, not "Mario" good

I do get annoyed when people mispronounce "Pokémon."  I keep hearing people say it like "Pokëmon" or "Polka-Man."

The Pipes!

They took the cool Pipe Maze from "Mario 3" and expanded it into the third dimension.  There should be more pipe mazes in "Mario" games, they're the best.

Graphics aren't everything, you need substance, too.  "Crash Bandicoot: Warped" may be light years more advanced than "Super Mario Bros. 3," but who's better in the long run?  It's the same with movies.  "The Phantom Menace" has several times the budget and special effects technology of the original "Star Wars," but "A New Hope" is still superior.

I've never played "Yoshi's Story," but I have heard things about it, good and bad.

Yes, I knew that.  Everyone does.  It's on this website.  There are name descrepancies between the two games, but I, like many mario fans on the 'net, call the "real" version "Super Mario Bros. 2: The Dream Machine" and the inferior Japanese rehash of the original "Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels."

I like the fact that you can't save in the classic "Mario" games.  That way, it's not too easy.  "Lost Levels" can't humanly be beaten without saves, though, so that's one exception.  "Mario 3" is absolutely perfect in difficulty, not too easy, not too hard.  "Mario World" and "Yoshi's Island" are too easy and "Lost Levels" and "Mario 2" are too hard.  "Mario 64" and "Mario R.P.G." are a different type of game, and saves are required there, just not (I think) in "Mario 1," "Mario 3," "Mario World," or "Yoshi's Island."

I just got "Kirby 64: The Crystal Stars" for Christmas and it kicks!  It's a pity they can't make "Mario" games that good, anymore.

I agree.  "Super Mario Bros. 2" and "Super Mario Land" are good, just sub-par on a "Mario" scale.  Read my earlier post on the subject.

It seemed to me that the "Mario" games were getting better and better and then "Super Mario Bros. 3" was the best but it would get better.  At first I saw "Super Mario World" (or "Super Mario Bros. 4" whatever you want to call it) as better than 3, but after playing them both in the same day at a friend's house I decided "3" was better.  My concept of progressively better "Mario" games was completely destroyed when I bought "Yoshi's Island" (or "Super Mario Bros. 5" or "Super Mario World 2" dang this is confusing). "M4" was certainly a revolution, but threw out too many of the elements from "M3" to be superior.  I have a certain conception of "Mario" mechanics that is present in "M1" "Lost Levels," "M3," and "M4" and the first two (the only ones I've played) "Mario Land" games but not in "M2," "M5," or "M64".  That makes "Mario," and the games that have radically different mechanics are not as good.  I hope "Paper Mario" has the "Mario" mechanics we know and love.

I haven't played "Yoshi's Story," but sort of on the same subject what does Mario say in "M64" that sounds like "Peggo?"
