General Chat / Mr. Bungle
« on: May 06, 2009, 10:08:56 AM »
Seeing as though Mr. Bungle covered Super Mario, I was wondering if anyone here cared for them much.

I've been a fan of Mr. Bungle since the nineties, mainly because of their complex, "insane" music. If yiu haven't heard them, I'd recommend starting off with either California or their sef-titled album. Disco Volante (Italian for "Flying Disc) may be a bit too weird for folk new to them. Maybe they're a little vulgar at times, but other than that, I can't understand why many people dislike them as much as they do. I wouldn't mind so much, but the majority of these people don't even appreciate it.

By the way, if anyone has the Cotati performance of Super Mario Bros. or "The Girls of Porn", could you send me it, please? I've been looking all over for it (and I already have the San Francisco, Gurneville, Club Lingerie and the Berkley Square performances, so if you have them, don't worry about it).

I don't think that Bill Gates' retirement will have any effect on M$, and if it does, it won't be anything negative.

My favorite composer would have to be Mozart. His piano skills were amazing, anyone that plays the piano looks up to that guy.

The only thing that beats classical is a bit of smooth jazz, which is equally amazing as funk jazz. The Night Court theme, anyone?

Don't forget Sea Devils or Silurians. Definately don't forget Ice Warriors.

I was never scared of monsters as a child, but I do love zombies.

Mario Chat / Musical Taste/Favorite SMB Theme
« on: December 30, 2007, 12:32:42 PM »
As a part time musician, I would be interested in knowing people's musical taste and how their opinion differs from my own, so I am asking people's favorite version of the Super Mario Bros. main theme. Please, when making a post, please go into detail. Don't just say 'the original one', because that is not what I am wanting to find out.

My own favorite would have to be the one that Mr. Bungle played at their gigs. I remember going to see them when I was on holiday in California years ago. They were fantastic.
Anyway, the reason I like their version the most is because of the mix of jazz and ska. It reminds me a lot of their other songs. They even threw in a bit of the RBI Baseball theme in their version.

Video Game Chat / Re: Favorite Video Game Company

Nintendo for me. I remember being about seventeen years old when I bought an NES. I've stuck with them. I used to like Sega, but their games aren't as good as they used to be.
Although, Infogrames were pretty good to. And so were Core.

My wife's leg.

Apologies, everyone. That was probably uncalled for.

General Chat / Re: Is there a musician in the house?
« on: December 18, 2007, 02:19:56 AM »
I play the guitar (bass, electric and acoustic), the saxaphone, the keyboard and the Irish whistle. Have been doing for years. I'm currently in a band of five people (they are all friends whome I used to go to school with years ago) - we play in the local pub about twice a year. When we do play, we do a lot of video game themes, but vary the way we play them a lot. We also like to do covers, as none of us can write very good songs :D
We tried to write one once, and it failed miserably, so we played the Tetris theme straight after.

It is obvious you have no clue what I am talking about because you were not alive during the NES era.  NES and SEGA Genesis where my era.  I even remember seeing the Mario Cartoons come on in the morning.  Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog both had cartoon series.  As I stated earlier: In that era if you said Mario brothers trilogy or all three of the Marios you were referring to Mario Brothers 1, SMB 2 American, and SMB 3 because Super Mario Brothers Japan did not exist in the United States during that era.  Also as some people put it referring to Lost Levels on SNES, it is nothing more then an expansion of the original SMB1.  (Back then we didn't have large Mario Sites that explained that was the game in Japan and we could care less whether it was the second Mario in Japan or not, SMB 2 was the American version in America.  No one I knew refered to the Japanese version as SMB 2).  It is no wonder I have problems talking to people on this board, none of you probably have even seen an NES or SEGA Genesis.
Excuse me, I'm 37. I bought one when I was sixteen. Do you remember Magnum P.I's first broadcast? I think not (even though that is not relevant.)

Mario Chat / Re: Favorite Mario game's

In order of best to worst (out of my favorite five):

1) Super Mario Bros.
2) New Super Mario Bros.
3) Super Mario 64
4) Super Mario Bros. 2 (J)
5) Super Mario Bros. 3

As I like to discuss things like this through giving points about why (that's the interesting part), I'll list my reasons later.

Also my main point was that in America and Europe, the original trilogy was SMB1, SMB 2 American, SMB 3 because we did not get to see SMB2J until All-Stars on the SNES.
No, there was no European or American original trilogy. There was only the real original trilogy. As SMB2J came out before SMB2 USA in Japan, the Japanese trilogy is the original. The European and American trilogy was not the original. There can be only one original.

Yes but this is an English/American site and therefore SMB2 (American) is a part of the trilogy since the other one was only release in Japan and basically is SMB1 just different levels and maybe a couple of new items.
All I was getting at was that the Japanese trilogy is the original. If the American/European trilogy wasn't referred to as the original trilogy, I would have said nothing.

Mario Chat / Re: why do so many mario fans hate sonic?
« on: November 27, 2007, 03:17:48 PM »
I've always had an interest in Sonic. He's always seemed quite appealing. As I believe a user said a short while ago, his attitude is a bit of a downside to his personality. He seems a bit self indulgent. I've always preferred Mario, as back in '85 when I was about 16, I bought an NES and the first game I had for it was Super Mario Bros. The first home video game I ever played (obviously, I had before that played games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong in the arcade). And I like his mustache. That's reason enough.

As I said, I do like Sonic. I like it's fast pace and it's general story, though as I stated, I do quite prefer Mario.

I searched again, you're right, it's not hard to find anymore. Took a while to find the FDS  bios, but that doesn't matter.
