This is perhaps the coolest program I have seen in my life. It's a complete 3D picture of the world that NASA made using satellite photos. There are tons of options and overlays. Anyone who can, download it. It's a bit heavy on disk space, though.

Does the surface only get that detailed when viewing large cities, like LA?

Time slowed and Reality bent.
But on and on the Eggman went.

There are many types of map overlays you can put on, but yes, you can only get big US cities that crisp in color. You can get pretty much anywhere pretty crisp in black and white, though.
