How do you return items in Mario Is Missing!   My son is playing the game and we can't figure out how to return the items to their booths!  It won't let us! Nor do we know how to put in the passwords!

This should have gone in the Game Help forum, and I don't know.

Time slowed and Reality bent.
But on and on the Eggman went.

Ah, yes. I have owned this game for the past 10 years. I can tell you how to return items and put in passwords.

---------------------
HOW TO RETURN ITEMS
---------------------

First, go to an Information Kiosk (a building with a big "I" on it, and a woman in the window). Press "A" to talk to the woman, and press "A" again to select the first option on the menu "Why is the [insert monument here] closed today?" She will explain what artifact was stolen and give you a newsletter. Read the newsletter to learn some facts about the monument (and also earn a bit of new information yourself). Now you know what artifact was stolen.

Then, you have to look for Koopa Troopas- these red turtles that walk back and forth. You have to jump on them. Only three of the Koopa Troopas carry a missing artifact. You know you have stepped on one that holds an artifact when it drops this black bag-looking thing on the ground. Walk and position yourself on the bag-thing and jump to pick it up. Press the "START" button to open the menu, and look at the row entitled "Artifact". There will be a picture of the new artifact you just picked up. With that specific picture highlighted (use the LEFT and RIGHT arrows on the Control Pad to do so), go to the Monument's Information Kiosk in which the artifact was stolen from. Press "A" to talk to the woman in the window. Press the DOWN arrow on the Control Pad to select the second choice "I want to return the [insert artifact here] that was stolen." Press "A" to select it. If it is the correct artifact to the specific monument, you will continue to the quiz, and she will ask some questions about the monument (this is why you read the newsletter she gave you). Press "A" to select "Sure, ask anyway." On the quiz, when she asks the question, use the DOWN and UP arrow buttons on the Control Pad to highlight the answer, and press "A" to select it. She will ask three questions. If you answer a question wrong, she will send you away and ignore you for a minute or so.

HINT: The answer to a question is NEVER the fourth choice listed (if one exists for selected questions).

Answer all of them right, and the "CLOSED" sign in the kiosk will disappear: the artifact is successfully returned. Go inside the kiosk by pressing UP on the Control Pad and you photograph the monument. Press any button or so to exit. Repeat this until all stolen artifacts are retrieved from the Koopa Troopas, and all the artifacts are returned to their owners.

---------
PASSWORDS
---------

When you successfully return all of the artifacts and exit the city through the single blue pipe, your score will be totaled and a password will be given. Write down what is written for the password.

To use this password, at the title screen select "Continue Search". Press the UP and DOWN arrows on the control pad to select to required letter/number/symbol, and press the RIGHT and LEFT arrow buttons to move onto the previous or next entry of the password. When the password is completely written in, press the "START" button. If the password is wrong, it will be rejected and you must try again. If it is correct, the screen will fade black and your game will resume from its previous state.

Well, that's pretty much all I can tell for now, of all basic things for returning artifacts and passwords. If you're still confused, try reading this backup of the original game manual:

Hope all of this helps!
