Avatars also let you easily see who posted. It's not a big deal here since the forum is so small, but on big forums it may be hard to remember all the names.

I like how Baidu (China's leading search engine) sometimes scans Fungi Forums, presumably patrolling for anti-Chinese sentiments.

I'm not even sure how you're seeing those button graphics in the FF beta theme. Were you using a different theme recently? Maybe try clearing your browser cache.

Changing themes a couple of times fixed it. (It was messed up on all browsers and deleting cache and cookies had no effect.)
