I still have my doubts. Granted, in those two frames, it does seem as if he is hitting Yoshi, but I feel there is a frame or two missing in between or after.

Take the earlier screens for an example. Yoshi Smack 1 and 2 are in the exact same position as the second screen provided by Fifth. And from the new screens, we don't see the before motion or the after motion.

Although the new screens look more like a 'smack', I still feel pointing is more or less what Mario is doing.

Keep in mind htat this is a NES game; you're not missing a lot in the ways of animation.
The first frame is the first of the action.  Before that it's just Mario riding Yoshi, who's just standing there.  Mario stays in the position of the second picture for the entire time while Yoshi's tounge is out, his hand in the same spot.  Then it returns to the first picture with Mario's hand in the air (minus the mushroom) which doubles as Yoshi swallowing.  After that, they're just standing there again.

Couple of things to say:

When Mario has his hand "across his chest" in Yoshi "Smack" 3, that is what I look like when I put MY hand back from pointing.

Yoshi "Smack" 2: The "little thing" isn't from his cruddy digital camera, that's his finger!

That isn't a look of fear, he's getting ready to slurp what Mario is going to point at. When he runs from being hit, that isn't fear either. That's probably sweat from running faster than he's used to. They couldn't program sweat in yet.

If it WAS fear, then why would Yoshi give Mario 100 lives and a special Triple Jump in Super Mario 64?

Isn't smb all-stars master starting a flame war?

no, Im not (intentionally) starting a flame war. These are just opinions (right guys?) If your trying to get into a flame war, GO AWAY! as for my pictures, they prove yoshi doesn't get smacked in SMW. but in this other game.....Why does Yoshi give Mario a hundred lives, you ask? well, Mario hasnt been smackin Yoshi lately, he stopped in SMW. hey, its only fair Yoshi isn't abused after Yoshi's island  0_~.

If you think I'm intentionally starting a flame war, or accuse me of starting a flame war, oh I'll give you a flame war.

I'm sorry about that. I was still mad because Kirby_101 was banned for holding his opinion that Luigi was in SM64. I didn't really mean that you started a flame war, but hold Up on the D-Pad when you press Y. Yoshi doesn't move his head down, but Mario makes the exact same motion as when you only press Y.

That's proof that Mario doesn't smack Yoshi. If he did, then Yoshi would still move his head down even when you hold Up on the D-Pad.

Sorry again for that false accusition.

kirby_101 was banned because he temporarily disabled not one, but two forums from his reckless use of HTML.

aye, but maybe Mario smacks Yoshi in a different place and he doesnt feel it when you do that? nah, thats horribly illogical. We now know Mario most likely doesnt smack Yoshi in smw, but in the other game...

What about the Troopas?

« Reply #23 on: June 14, 2002, 01:13:24 PM »
I meen. They don't do anything to Mario. All they are doing is walking down the street. All of the sudden Mario comes and plows through them! Then they cause damage to Mario. If someone plowed through you wouldn't you want to get back at them too? Now all of the sudden the Troopa is the bad guy. If running into it wasn't enough. Mario has to jump on top of the poor little thing too. In SMW the poor guy gets shot write our oh is shell! Mario also thows vegtables at birds in SMB2. Then Mario goes and makes Yoshi eat those little gophers in shades. So don't just feel pitty for Yoshi. Feel pitty for all those animals. No waunder some of them, like Yoshi, want to beet Mario up in the SSB trilogy.

How do you explain when you hold up and have Yoshi eat then? Mario still sticks his hand out, and it goes to the right of Yoshi's head.
Thief, thief! Baggins! We hates it forever!

Once again, Mario is pointing when he does that, but not in some of the older games. But what was said above about Mario chuckin vegetables and all that, yes Mario does abuse animals, but getting back to yoshi, in SMW, Mario points. But in Yoshi!, he smacks.

C'mon people, lets keep this argument goin!

Ok, update. When you jump when you're on Yoshi, he has that look of "fear" on his face again. I'm telling you, if it is a look of fear, then Yoshi's paranoid. Afraid of JUMPING?!

I was wrong about it being his finger, I played the game recently and I noticed that there is only a circle there, but when his hand is "across his chest", thats where it is when he's just standing there. Looks like Yoshi has reins (lol). We already know that Mario didn't smack Yoshi in SMW now, but with Yoshi!, it still looks like he's pointing, because Mario's hand is again to the right of Yoshi's head.

Forgot to say this sooner, but Yoshi's Island tecnnically is Mario's first adventure

Enough of this, I still say Mario is smacking Yoshi EVERY time he "points" in every Mario game ever made where this is applicable.

Why would he be POINTING?!?!? You think Mario doesn't think Yoshi can see where he is going? You all may think otherwise, but I still say Mario is hitting Yoshi and not pointing. I have my reasons though... and you all won't understand most of them.

You know what? I got really, really bored one day so I decided to change my signature.

Well, of course Yoshi can see where he's going, but he may not always know what Mario wants him/doesn't want him to eat.  He's not psychic.  So Mario points it out to him.

Which isn't to say that I'm convinced he's pointing, because I'm not, just that your logic is flawed.  I'm not sure if he is hitting him either, but that would make sense if he were--how do we ride horses in real life?  You kick them, often with sharp spurs on your heels, to get them started and pull on their heads with the reins to direct them.  I'm not saying that's right, but it is the way it's done, and it would make sense for that to be what Mario's doing in the game(s).

But I'm curious as to what these reasons you have are that you think no one would understand.  Try us, because I'm all interested now . . .  :D

Maybe Mario just gently taps him. It's a compromise for both sides of this argument.
