Yes, Black Mage, it is.
I'm in a similar situation on a Star Fox board I go to. To make a long story short, it's mainly one person saying "Krystal shouldn't be in Star Fox games," while I'm listing reasons she should be considered a "legitimate" part of the series. People have tried to tel us just to forget it, but I feel that I'll appear wishy-washy and uncaring about what I think. So I keep arguing. Stubbornness is indeed a terrible burden.
That was a joke.

Heh, my school, being pretty much nothing but converts who now insult anyone who buys a NGC. The GBA is ok, though.

Bleh, I say that if your tastes change, go ahead and like whatever system you want. But under NO circumstances should you EVER:

1. Insult anyone who plays a system you "grew out of":
2. Insult anyone one for playing a game you "grew out of":
3. Insult anyone for doing anything you don't like.

Of course, my class does all 3. Shallow [explitive]s. Here's an actual quote by at least 10 people from my high school class (And this has almost become a joke around my class... everyone LOVES to watch me flip out over insignificant things.) regarding the TV show American Idol. (If you don't like AI... don't say anything. I mean, reality crap is big in our school for some reason.)

(Edited for inappropriate language, even on my part)

Classmate: Who do you want to win American Idol?
Shallow Idiot #1: Ruben! Of course!
Me: Why's that?
SI #1: Because I don't want that f____t Clay to win! I mean, look at him! He wears eye shadow! He shouldn't win just for that!
Me: Wait a second. Your judging a SINGING contest by how the contestants LOOK? You're so f___ing shallow.
SI #1: F___ing f____t doesn't deserve to win anything.
SI #2: Yes, are you saying you're gay, Steve? I mean, you want the f__ to win.
SI #3: Steve's a homo!
Me: THAT'S IT! F____ YOU ALL! I'm no longer considering myself a member of the dumbest class on our school's history. When I get home, I'm ripping the "05" off my letter jacket. (I never did)
SI #3: Wait, so you're going back to the class of '06?
SI #2: No, you're just mad because we found out your secret.

See what I have to put up with in my school? And THAT is why I don't have a GameCube. Of course, my class dropped the gay rumors about 2 days after this conversation, but I still hate my shallow idiot class.

*sigh* You all think it's easy for someone like me to just go out and buy a GameCube. It's not. You don't know how judgmental my classmates are. By Class of '05 logic, I'm a bad mathematican because I have brown hair. (Makes no sense, I know. And it's absurd. But that's how my class thinks.)

Well, I dragged a perfectly good thread well off topic. The AI convo is only meant to show you all how idiotic my clasmates are... and THAT is why there's so many converts there.

EDIT: Wow. 7 replies whilst I typed this. Amazing.

Congratulations! You have just been blessed by the wisdom of Steve.

"SI #3: Wait, so you're going back to the class of '06?"

Sorry, Insane Steve, but I must admit, that quote struck me as quite comical.

However, I do see where you're coming from. Putting up with such idiocy is quite common now days, and becomes part of everyone's day. Yet, I don't find that enough reason to not buy something you want. You're classmates are idiots, that we've established, so why do their opinions matter so much? Granted, you'd have to put up with their remarks for a bit, but judging from this situation, they would die-down in a relatively short period of time. I mean, they seem to like to move from one thing to the next, and I can't see someone with their mental capabilities sticking to one thing for very long.

Heheheh...American Idol has been talked about ALL THE TIME, EVERYWHERE here, recently. The again, Clay's from my town, so that'd make sense. :)

And thank you for editing that language, Steve. :)  Your classmates are so shallow. And just because they think GCN's "gay," that shouldn't prevent you from getting one. How would they ever know, anyway? No offense, but if you're that insecure about it, you don't HAVE to tell them.

Gah! You posted too fast! Anyway, that's what I've been wondering, too, Steve. If you hate them and define them as shallow idiots, why would you care so much about what they think?

I believe that Steve has said that he doesn't directly care what his "classmates" think, but it's the fact that they won't leave him alone about it and stuff like that.
That was a joke.

Yes, that is exactly correct. While I don't directly take their advice on the matter (I.E., I'm not going to say something like "Oh, I'm not buying a GameCube because my classmates don't like it!") ... it's their reaction to it that I'm afraid of. That conversation was an attempt to show you how they think. You say something they disagree with, and you're automatically a homo. That's how it is in our school! I'd probably lose about half my semi-friends if I DID buy a NGC. And given my social status in my school, I can't afford to lose any semi-friends.

And it's not as easy as "Don't tell anyone about it." Someone will find out, even if I don't invite anyone to my house. My school is quite nosey.

Anyways, it is for these reasons that I won't say ANYTHING about my favorite media things, either. For example:

Q: What's your favorite movie?
A: I haven't the attention span for movies. I have ADD, remember?

Q: What's your favorite TV show?
A: I like the Simpsons, and a few other things. (Although I won't say my "other" favorite shows. I have 2 others. Nothing "childish", though.)

Q: What kind of music do you like?
A: I like most music... Except Destniy's Child. (In actuality, I like a wide range of more "intellectual music" like Classical (some of it, anyways), and one of my favorite CDs is the CD from the musical "Blast!" ... essentially a drum corps like show. Of course, I don't say this, because I know I'd be insulted by everyone for not liking rap where everyone swears about 4 times a sentence.)

Q: What's your favorite video game?
A: Well... I like most Mario games. And a few others. Basically, everything that isn't an FPS or sports game. (Vague, yes. I'm surprised I tell them about the Mario. And yes, I do take flack for even THAT.)

So yes, I don't like my class much because of they way they judge you on really pointless things. Here's one of my Ten Rules Of Living: (A list I have SOMEWHERE)

"Don't judge others by what they like, judge them by what they ARE like."

Of course, my classmates obviously don't follow that at all.

Congratulations! You have just been blessed by the wisdom of Steve.

Wow. I'd hate to be at your school. I vaugely remember you saying something like your life was "ruined at the tender age of..."...I can't remember the age you said. But still, no wonder you're so insecure about that stuff.

If they ever prodded and insulted me like that, I just wouldn't say anything about what I like. I'm STILL a bit cautious, but not as much anymore.
If they don't like me for what I like, THEY'RE the ones with the problem, not me, and that's their own problem. Then again, I pretty secure. Luckily I'm quieter, so I usually keep my mouth shut in the first place. When people ask me questions about what I like, I'm VERY, VERY vague.

Music? I dunno, really.
TV show? (Now THAT I'm open to, since most people like the shows I like.) Simpson's, Friends, SNL...(I have more, but those are the most popular, so I don't say anything more.
Movie?: Wow. Too many to choose from. ...Probably Austin Powers 3: Goldmember. (once again, another popular thing)
Video Games? Mostly Action/Adventure.

...And I leave it at that. They usually don't pry too much. That, and I don't have a hard time saying "no" to people.

Usually, I only make VERY subtle hints about what I like or believe in. Once I realize someone else has the same interest (usually by them--and only them--picking up on these hints), it is then that I speak up openly.

While I care what people think about me, if they're an idiot, their opinion is invalid. If they don't like something I like, that's still not gonna stop me from liking it.

Hm, it seems that you're in quite the predicament. However, if these people judge you on such things, then why would you want them as even "Semi-friends." I'd say go out and buy a Game Cube, I'm sure you'd be surprised at the results.

However, that's easier said then done, isn't it? I can say that, because I'm not the one in your situation. If you honestly feel you're at the risk of losing anyone you've considered a friend, then I guess it's not worth the risk. However, I find that hard to believe. There must be people in your class that wouldn't judge you on such low standards.

So, I guess my advice to you would be to go out and buy one. Yet, I can't say that, as I know I wouldn't be able to take such a risk. I guess only time will tell, however, I think that you'd be pleasantly surprised as to how many of your friends you'd still have after the whole situation would blow over.
