I've always wondered, but never asked...

What are those bizzare egg-shaped jewels (in which each one had a question mark on them like the Item Blocks) which appear for the taking after you defeat each fortress in Super Mario Bro.s 3!?

There was also at least one in the sunken Koopa Airship in Super Mario World.

I don't really know what they are, but they simply serve to make something happen on the map (a door opening or the entrance to Dark Land rising out of Soda Lake) and exit you from the level.  I wouldn't think them any more significant than a P-switch, in terms of existence.

I'd agree with that.  Basically "event" markers.  The event was a mystery, hence the question mark. Usually it'd unlock doors or create bridges, and then in SMW's case, show the entrance to the Valley of Bowser.

Okay...
But doesn't anyone know what they're, at least, called?

Would it be in the original SMB3 manual?  I don't think it was, but I can't imagine where else it would be.

You may have something there, Screech...

Although, it does not really answer anything about those egg-shaped jewels or orbs...
