Game Blog / Super Mario in 14kb JavaScript
« on: April 08, 2008, 11:19:21 PM »

An interesting programming experiment sought to see whether a game could be stored in a single JavaScript file.  The author chose to implement Super Mario Bros. for the project.  No Flash or Java was used.  While the game isn't coded as completely as the real game (e.g. one level, no power-ups, poor physics, bad music), it is neat to see what can be accomplished in browsers with a small amount of code.  Look at it as a proof of concept of the internet to come.  The author also talks about a few tricks he used, with sprite storage analogous to the way sprites were stored on the NES.  As the game makes use of recent additions to JavaScript/HTML, try upgrading your browser if it doesn't work properly.

Site Discussion / Mariopedia Wiki
« on: March 25, 2008, 02:05:27 AM »
As you may have noticed, Mariopedia has finally relaunched with some new features.  Of special note to forum goers is the new wiki functionality.  Now everybody can contribute directly to TMK!

This is not the final version of the Mariopedia wiki, and there is still much to be added, but I'd like to invite everyone to begin editing Mariopedia descriptions.  Currently, you can not add new items or edit stats; that ability will come later.  Valid HTML markup is allowed, but make sure any markup is appropriate.

You can add info wherever you see the "wiki" links. Your login is your forum login.  All forum rules apply there. Abuse, including the addition of incorrect information or the deletion of good information may result in a ban from both the forums and the wiki.  All changes are recorded along with your login name, so people will be able to find your contributions.

Let me know if you run into trouble.

Have fun!

Game stores such as GameStop, ebgames, and Game Crazy have recently received full copies of Super Mario Galaxy for use in their demo kiosks.  So, if you want to check out Mario Galaxy early, try your nearest game retailer.  Inevitably, some employee dumped and uploaded the game to the internet already, over two weeks before it will be available for purchase.

Latest News / SMB2J, Mario's Super Picross rated for Australia
« on: September 02, 2007, 01:06:49 AM »
The OFLC has rated two previously-Japan-only games for Australia and New Zealand: Super Mario Bros. 2 (JPN) and Mario's Super Picross.  Both games were rated G and have not yet been officially announced by Nintendo.  While it's not clear how soon they will be available for download, it's exciting to see Japanese Nintendo games finally be considered for worldwide release.

Latest News / SSBB: WarioWare stage revealed
« on: August 31, 2007, 06:43:04 AM »

Much like Super Flat Zone from SSBM, SSBB introduces a new offbeat stage that looks to be even wackier and more unique: WarioWare, from the same-titled series!  While players fight, the environment switches between microgames.  Players have to complete the microgames' tasks or risk environmental damage, and successful completion promises rewards.  In between microgames, the familiar WarioWare elevator appears in the background behind a standard battlefield stage.  Click the link below to check out several of included microgames.

Latest News / SSBB: Petey Piranha officially announced
« on: August 24, 2007, 01:19:53 AM »

As many on the forums guessed and/or feared, Petey Piranha, originally appearing in Super Mario Sunshine, is the first boss character announced for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  In the earlier Subspace Emissary (Adventure Mode) video, Petey had locked up both Peach and Zelda in cages and Kirby was ready to face off against the newly-fearsome monster.  The update says that you can only save one of the women...

Latest News / SSBB: Yoshi's Final Smash
« on: August 23, 2007, 01:20:55 AM »

Today's dual update of Smash Bros. DOJO includes Yoshi's Final Smash.  While Yoshi may have spouted cute little wings in Mario Strikers Charged, in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Yoshi gains wings of a size that eclipse even Pit's.  And that's not the end of the story.  Yoshi first got his flying ability in Super Mario World by eating a blue shell (or grabbing the wings directly).  Red shells gave him the ability to spit fire.  Well, he gets that ability too, as well as the ability to breath fire as if he had eaten a red watermelon in Yoshi's Island.  It's not clear if he also gets the yellow shell's ground pounding ability; i.e. if his Final Smash is identical to eating a flashing shell in Super Mario World, but the Final Smash's name is "Super Dragon," which is how he signed the note at his house in the original Japanese Super Mario World.  Check out the rest of the screens by following the link below.

Latest News / SSBB: Diddy's Kong Quest
« on: August 22, 2007, 03:39:30 AM »

Diddy Kong has recently appeared in several Mario spin-off games.  Now DK's buddy enters the arena as the latest fighter to be unveiled for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  The slightly late update on Smash Bros. DOJO notes that Diddy's moves aren't sufficiently captured by screenshots.  It also mentions that Diddy brings along some technological moves: the Rocketbarrel Boost and the Peanut Pop Gun.  See the rest of Diddy's screens at the link below.

Bob Hoskins, who played Mario in the sometimes-infamous Super Mario Bros: The Movie, has spoken out about the project fourteen years later in an interview with The Guardian.  And he doesn't have anything positive to say.

"The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Brothers. It was a ****in' nightmare. The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks their own agent told them to get off the set! ****in' nightmare. ****in' idiots."

Incidentally, the directors, Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton, haven't directed a film since.  Though the film initially received a lukewarm reception by critics in part due to their lack of video game understanding, it has become a popular target of derision by gamers due to the liberties taken with the story.  Now we see what the starring actor really thought about the whole deal, and a good reason why there was never a sequel despite the cliffhanger ending.

Latest News / Mario Party 8 Launched, Recalled in the UK
« on: July 14, 2007, 02:41:26 PM »
Nintendo of Europe posted the following announcement on their website on July 13:

Mario Party 8 was launched in the UK today. Unfortunately we have discovered that a small number of games contain the wrong version of the disk due to an assembly error. We have therefore decided to recall all copies of the game from UK retailers so that this mistake can be corrected.

We will re-launch Mario Party 8 in the UK as soon as possible and will announce a new launch date shortly. We very much regret any inconvenience caused.

However, an online rumor indicates a possible alternate reason for the recall. The game contains the following incantation by Kamek:

Magikoopa magic!
Turn the train spastic!
Make this ticket tragic!

The inclusion of the word "spastic" resulted in a recall of Ubisoft's MindQuiz for Nintendo DS late last month after a woman publicly complained that the game had called her "Super Spastic." The term holds an offensive connotation in the UK, particularly with regard to those afflicted with cerebral palsy, a disease from which her son had recently died. The word is generally innocuous in North America, and highlights the care that must be taken during localization, even when the language doesn't change.
