I don't celebrate this holiday outside of its religious purpose (the celebration of a saint's feast day). I usually only celebrate holidays with a small group of people if the said holiday carried some important significance. For instance, I will celebrate the 4th of July, but not with fireworks and other sillyness. I will celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday, and I downplay the giving of gift as much as humanly possible. I celebrate Easter because, again, of its religious significance. I know a lot of people here will have a mouthful to say about my celebrating religious holidays, but that is not the reason for this post.
I do not like to be duped by the silly media and industries that fabricate holidays for profit. Furthermore, I find the interpretation of romance found on this day to be rather sickening. "Show your love by buying things" is not really accurate. That reduces love to a feeling, something which it is not.
I have the same problem with mother's day and father's day. They both are built around the premise that you show your love by buying things for ma or pop. I would rather (and so would they) me spend time with them then spend money on them.
