Does anyone here think that it was a bad idea to take a game (doki doki panic) and make SMB2 out of it, or just plain think that SMB2 was a bad idea overall?

Yeah, I actually know a few people who call it an abomination. That's a little off. These people have obviously not played Yoshi's Safari...

I liked Yoshi's Safari...

Yoshi Safari was fun. It wasn't really popular, but it was good.

I accidentally clicked "Yes" but I meant "No" I thought it was a great idea, taking a game and turning it into another. All in all it's one of my favorite Mario games.
What's your problem, Cambodian?

Arguments for SMB2 (most if not all of this has already been said)

- So what if it was never a Mario game to begin with. Neither was go-kart racing, and that turned out all right. Sure, Mario Kart is very different from traditional racing, but there was nothing in DDP left to Mario-ify. If no one told you you wouldn't know the difference--it's just an out-there Mario game.

- It essentially got us another game onto the Mario game list. SMB2J has been released several times outside of Japan, whereas DDP would not have been if not made into SMB2.

- Who knows for certain how it would have been with or without the SMB2 events? Maybe SMB2J would have been really popular here, maybe it would have bombed. Any complaints with how Mario is today? With a hold over kids' minds almost as strong as Santa's? I'm fine with it. A bomb of a game wouldn't hurt Mario very much these days because the series has already had too much success to be ruined by one game. But that was The Sequel. Anything could have happened. I'm not saying SMB2J would have certainly killed it all. But I'm not saying it wouldn't have, either. I don't know.

I recall seeing a picture of Mario and Imajin (the boy in DDP) shaking hands. I really believe it was going to be converted into a Mario title from the start.

It was not a bad idea, and it was not a bad game, either (in either of its NES incarnations).

Considering that it was the #3 best selling game on NES and sold in a lot of other incarnations, how could it have been a bad idea.  That's almost like saying Halo was a bad idea for Microsoft.  Video game companies like most other companies are in buisness to make money.  NTM, all the things like Luigi's jump, Peach's float, Shyguys, and etc. it introduced.

Toad's speed, which is a recurring theme in the Mario Kart and spinoff games (small and speedy).

You don't happen to know where to find this picture, do you? It sounds neat.

Ooh neat! .. and somewhat familiar. I think I've seen it before, but can't remember where (though the place I've seen it has prbably long since gone out of business, knowing my luck).

I wouldn't have been surprised if this was meant to be converted to a Mario game from the beginning, as after all Miyamoto actually had more involvement with the development of DDP than SMB2J. I wouldn't have been surprised if the team was originally making a Mario game at first, then changed it into the Fuji TV ad after acquiring that deal, then changed back into a Mario game. Alright, so that was a stretch and probably didn't happen.

As for a bad idea, no it wasn't at all. Like many have said, several of the series' routes are dug into Super Mario Bros 2. If it weren't for the conversion, we wouldn't have had Shy Guys, Mario and Luigi would still be generic pallet swaps, and the trademarked weirdness of the Mario series wouldn't have gotten it's reputation (alright so SMB was pretty out there, but not nearly as much as SMB2). I think the whole "SMB2 sucks" obsession is just associated with the fact that it was so different; plus the knowledge of DDP gives haters a good excuse to bash the game. I'm not saying you have to like the game, but the appreciation of SMB2's contributions are often dismissed.

I'll bet most of the people who hate it probably couldn't beat it. :D
