In my opinion, I don't consider Smash Bros. a fighting game. I mean, there is punching and kicking involved, but a real fighting game is where you keep hitting people until they run out of vitality. In Smash Bros., you run around and ttack until someone falls off the arena. And you can use like, fireballs, electricity, and even items.

I think nintendo was trying to start their own genre.

Does anyone else consider smash bros. a fighting game? This is a yes or no question.

Yes, I consider Smash bros a fighting game. If you want Vitality, try the mode where the players start out with 300 HP (I forgot the name). And there are other fighting games that use items.

I do consider it a fighting game, though it is quite different from other games of the same genre.

Stamina Mode.

SSB is a fighting game. Kicking and punching are fighting. Mortal Kombat even uses moves involving the elements. And people can throw stuff or hit each other with bludgeons as part of fighting. What else could it be? Edutainment?

No, it's more of a point-and-click text adventure if you ask me.

I always treat it as a platformer.

Let's look at the facts:
1. I'm simply terrible at all fighting games.
2. I'm really good at platformers.
3. I can hold my own in Smash Bros.

I think the different characters and play styles allow for a good amount of variety in the way people can approach the game, but to me it'll always be a platformer first and a fighter second.

I think silverstarman brings up a good point when he said Nintendo might have been trying to make a new genre. It really isn't a traditional fighting game, and it really isn't a true platformer. Yet the game has elements of both.

It's a fighting game in the way that Mario Kart is a racing game.
Remember that your first Goomba boldly you walk? When Mario touched that mushroom being brought up more largely remember that you are surprised? Miscalculate your jump that pit remember that it falls?

I completely agree. Point-and-click text adventures are as much like fighting games as MMORPGs are like racing games. Good analogy, Max.

Smash Bros is a fighting game, as the objective is to attack you opponents until they are highly damaged, then smash them out of the arena  for a KO. Then this repeats until they have no more lives or the time runs out. It may not be a fighting game in the style of Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, but it's a fighting game neverless.

It's some kind of freak of the industry. A plat-former/fighter hybrid.
