Forgive me if someone elese has already brought this up, but I'm curious as to whether the mushroom people's heads are actually like mushrooms or if they're hats.  I've people say both, but I don't know what the official answer is.

They're mushroom people. It's not a hat.

I don't think any official Nintendo lore has explicitly stated that the mushroom caps atop mushroom people are their actual heads, but it's supposed to be assumed.  If they were only hats, then by now we would have seen a picture of a mushroom person with their hat off.

This is not a signature.

That happened in the cartoon.  Maybe in the comics as well, but I can't remember.

Yeah the cartoon messed everyone up...

I don't base any of my facts or theories on the cartoon. Even though it was officially endorsed by Nintendo, they didn't proof-check it for actual facts and stuff.

Hey, I was reading Super Mario-kun (comic) and there was this one part of it where the shyguys were stealing stuff from Toad Town (Paper Mario).  Mario goes up to Tayce T. and asks what's going on and she says that shyguys are stealing stuff from around the town and her frypan was stolen.  Then a shyguy comes up and steals her mushroom cap.  And she's bald!  Although it sortof adds to the topic, it was completely humor-based, therefore it won't assist your conversation...  I'll try to upload a picture sometime.

I theorize that it's probably like a haircut when their shroom top is removed. It is a piece of them but isn't needed to live and can be removed. They wouldn't very well be mushroom people if their only mushroom feature were a hat.

So if it can be cut like hair, why do all the mushroom people wear the same hairdo?  I'd love to see a mushroom person with their mushroom cap "carved" into some shape, like a Mohawk or something.

Maybe the Mushroom King is some kind of weirdo dictatorish king who makes his kingdom's people wear the same mushroom cap/hair/head.

Well if the mushroom is actually a portion of their head, then it probably would be a good idea to carve it up.  I mean, I know that realistic biology isn't often considered in the Mario universe, but I would imagine that the mushroom portion of their head would contain their brain or something.  That's just what I think, anyway.

Actually, if you take REAL biology into account, you'd realize that if you cut open a toad's cap, etc., spores would come out and create mini-toads (?).  Also un SMS, if you jump/spray a toad and they gat mad at you, they might shake their heads at you.  Then if you listen, you can hear a rattling.

Well, since the games don't tell us directly whether thay're hats or heads, then anything is possible.  So basically, there isn't really a right answer, it's up to your imagination to solve what the things on their heads are.

I think they're part of their heads, because if you look at a real mushroom, the top doesn't just come off.

Signature under Construction.
