Hudson Soft developed this sequel to Super Mario Bros. for the NEC PC-8801 and Sharp X1 home computers. In Super Mario Bros. Special, Mario returns to the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool from the evil clutches of Bowser. Along the way, he'll find enemies from three of his earlier games, power-ups new and old, and more traps and puzzles waiting for him. Mario explores the 32 all-new levels one screen at a time; when he reaches the right side of the screen, a new screen is displayed with Mario on the left side.

Enemies

All the enemies from SMB return in Super Mario Bros. Special, along with upside-down Piranha Plants (also seen in the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2), two enemies from Donkey Kong (barrels and fireballs), and three enemies from Mario Bros. (Sidesteppers, Fighterflies, and falling icicles).

Below are the enemies from Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. as listed in the "Cast" section of the game credits.

• Chokichoki (Sidestepper)
• Nakaji (Fighterfly?)
• Tarusar (Barrel)
• Sigebou (Fireball?)
• Tsurara (Icicle)

Items and power-ups

Super Mario Bros. Special has five new power-ups as well as all the original items from SMB. The "New Characters" section of the game credits lists the names of the five new items:

• Hachisuke - The bee from Hudson's logo gives Mario 8,000 points.
• Hummer - The hammer from Donkey Kong.
• Clock - Adds 100 seconds to the timer.
• Wing - Lets Mario fly (swim through the air) for a limited time.
• Lucky Star - Kills all enemies on the screen.
