Cameo appearances and references

Among its many pop-culture references, Guacamelee! includes references to Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, and the Super Mario Bros. NES game.

The re-release, Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition, has a new level with a Mario Kart reference.

Mario and Luigi

In the town of Santa Luchita, there's a "Los Super Hermanos" (translation: "The Super Brothers") poster depicting two mustachioed luchadores resembling Mario and Luigi. One has a red mask with an "M" on the front, and the other has a green mask with a backwards "L" on it. There are two smaller versions of the same poster inside Combo Chicken's Gym, which is also in Santa Luchita.

In another part of Santa Luchita, there's a wall with exposed bricks in the shape of an 8-bit small Mario sprite from Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros.

The end of the Alebrije chase sequence in the Temple of Rain is based on the end of the Super Mario Bros. castle levels. You eventually run into a room with a large, gold axe at the end of a bridge. When you touch the axe, the bridge breaks apart, dropping the Alebrije into a pool of lava. In the next room, the enemy character X'tabay tells you, "Sorry Luchador, but your princess is in another castle."

Donkey Kong

When you enter Desierte Caliente from Santa Luchita, you'll see a tall Donkey Kong statue at the end of the path. Starting at its base, the statue's sections have an alternating sequence of barrel-DK-barrel-DK, but the second DK is cut off by the top of the screen.
