Overstock.com is having a four day video game sale. I'm not entirely sure when the sale started, but I thought these deals might be appealing to some of our TMK readers.

* Wii Mario Super Sluggers for $24.95

* Wii Wario Land: Shake It! for $24.95

... and while it isn't a Mario related title, I feel like I'd be doing our friends over at Kirby's Rainbow Resort a disservice if I didn't mention the following...

* NDS Kirby Super Star Ultra for $16.88

Overstock features $2.95 shipping, and I believe it's a flat rate no matter how many games you purchase.  Great time to pick up some games for your friends and family!

(Did I mention that I needed a copy of all three of those?  Just keep it in mind... I mean, it's not like my infamous wish list has ever done me any good.  Of course, there is a first time for everything, right?

A French fellow named Remi Gaillard decided to reenact some Mario Kart madness... along the streets of France.  I hadn't seen it before, but some of the rest of you might have.  In any event, seeing a fellow on a go kart tossing banana peels while swerving in between cars is interesting, at least for a few minutes.

Someone brought this to my attention recently... a music video about love and Mario Kart.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDBpQVhCMb8

Someone else then directed me to this.... weirdness.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuX5_OWObA0

I was going to do something more interesting with these, but I got tired of keeping them bookmarked, so I've unleashed them on the TMK community. Enjoy!

During a routine internet investigation for Mario-related madness, I stumbled across "The 40 Greatest Uses of the Super Mario Theme" on an odd website dedicated to lists.  It seems like the sort of thing some of you might enjoy, so feel free to go take a look -- I was rather impressed by the SMW track played by dialing a cellphone.

Go, take a look.

Many months ago, I got an e-mail about this webcomic, but I can't recall if I ever actually mentioned it much around TMK.  I was browsing some websites today and came across this comic... and felt a need to share it with you all.

Have a great weekend.

Toys R Us Clearance Deals 01:30:43 PM CT [MEGAߥTE]
If you can, stop by Toys R Us soon for some sweet deals on great games.  I didn't see any Mario games in the bargain bin, but there are several others that are well worth it -- only $7.98 (marked $9.98, but you get 20% off).  It's a shame Zack & Wiki for Wii didn't sell better given its quality, but its retail failure is your gain.  I also saw some other good games such as Elite Beat Agents for DS and Every Extend Extra for PSP.  The store I went to even threw in a free frisbee.  If you can't make it out to the store, you may still be able to pick up the games without the 20% discount, and with shipping added.  Still, it's probably worth it for some quality titles.  Even better, here's a coupon for $5 off if you spend $25, but it's only good today and tomorrow.

E3 2008: Where's Mario? 04:12:22 PM CT [Deezer]
Nintendo finished up their E3 press conference a few hours ago, and we are sad to report that there is not much news for the Mario crew. NCL President Satoru Iwata touched on the success of New Super Mario Bros., but Wario Land: Shake It! and Mario Super Sluggers were conspicuously absent from the upcoming games shown during the hour-long conference.

Though no new Mario games were announced, we saw (and heard) Mario references in the upcoming Wii games Animal Crossing: City Folk and Wii Music. The big bro's shirt was clearly visible in the City Folk video, and the Super Mario Bros. theme was performed during the Wii Music live demo.

Meanwhile, on Nintendo of America's press site, the release of Wario Land: Shake It! was quietly moved up one week, from September 29 to September 22.
July 4, 2008
NCL recently unveiled their minisite for Wario Land Shake (Wario Land: Shake It! in the USA).  Along with the cheery character art for the "Sha King", Captain Syrup, and Wario, you'll also find what appears to be the game's animated intro and some gameplay footage.

Super Mario Marathon for Child's Play 09:32:31 PM CT [Luigison]
Brian Brinegar, Dan May, and John Groth are playing Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, and 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy to raise money for Child's Play.  You can join in the fun by chatting with them while watching the marathon live on Ustream.  Of course you could donate to Child's Play for the kids and to show Brian, Dan, and John your support, but could you play all those Mario games for 55 hours straight?

Although I've never tried to play a marathon of games, I have donated to Child's Play before.  I gave several GBA SPs and SMA4:SMB3 to three childrens' hospitals a few years ago.  I think it's time to do it again.  I just wish I could afford to send Nintendo Wiis this time.  Makes me almost regret spending my money on a PS3 this week.

In a short interview with Wired Magazine, Shigeru Miyamoto discussed Nintendo's gamble with the Wii Remote, the semi-game nature of titles such as Wii Fit, and most amusingly, how quality control is conducted by saying "Oh, this looks like a Sega game. We need to make it look more like Mario."

In honor of the release of the Nintendo Wii's first official NHL/NHLPA licensed hockey video game (NHL 2K9, from 2K Sports), our main man Mario is taking a trip to Toronto. He'll be available for picture opportunities on the red carpet at Elgin Theatre, 6:15 p.m. ET, during the 2008 NHL Awards.

It seems like a rather unreasonable ploy to sell another iteration of another sport simulator, but you've got to admit, those official Mario costumes are pretty good.

WTMK lives... now with more music and additional features!

A brand new selection of music is now blasting from the WTMK servers, featuring music from the recent hits Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  In addition, we're experimenting with the introduction of show and programming blocks. There are currently two show blocks broadcasting on WTMK:

* "Classic Classics" -- Mario music the way it used to be... chip tune and 8-bit enthusiasts should be excited.

* "Spinoff Showcase" -- The Super Mario Bros. series has had a large number of spinoffs over the years, and Spinoff Showcase is where you'll hear music from all of them.  Wario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, and many, many more.

If the "show block" concept proves to be popular, a few additional blocks may be on the way.  If you have any suggestions on "shows" you'd like to hear on WTMK, feel free to suggest them!

Super Mario Cars 07:08:08 PM CT [Luigison]

I love seeing SMB sprites on cars.  Maybe I should paint my parents' old van with Mario sprites.  I know my daughter would love that and the Beep Beep Mario Car.  For more Mario inspired cars check out the link below.

Note:  I sent this to Super-Jesse weeks ago, and I haven't seen him for over a month.  I hope Bowser hasn't done something to him.

Edit:  Argh.  I was also going to blog about a new Mario Kart Wii wedding cake, but the source is down now.  Hopefully it'll be back soon.  http://www.thetanooki.com/2008/06/02/one-cake-to-rule-them-all/

Mario Themes Via Bassoon Quintet 02:55:48 AM CT [Suffix]

We can watch all sorts of folks play Mario themes on Youtube, but it's not every day you see a quintet of talented bassoonists increase the ranks. A variety of 2D Mario games are represented, including SMB1-3, SML, SMW1-2, perhaps even more! Bassoons (and contrabassoon) aside, the performers manage a bit of beatboxing (sneezing?), adding to the experience.

Feel free to share any unique performances you've witnessed to date.

Heavy Troopa is Ready to Launch! 01:08:20 AM CT [David]
A new fan remix album has been released recently, focusing on the Nintendo/Square game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.  I've just started browsing through the tracks, but it appears to feature a variety of remix "styles" (retro 8-bit chip music, syth, electro, orchestra, and more) and should appeal to those SMRPG lovers out there.  I may need to refresh my knowledge of SMRPG fan remixes, though, as I believe that not all the music in this album is "new" -- I recognize at least one older track by The OneUps.  Go download it yourself before the folks at GameMusic4All.com run out of bandwidth.

Banjo Blows Up Mario 01:59:09 PM CT [David]
Rare and Microsoft have released a trailer for their upcoming game Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts for the Xbox 360.  Near the end of the trailer, the bear and bird fly past a giant 8-bit Mario, and a few seconds later they blow the head off of it.  Whether that's self-referential humor regarding the departure from Nintendo or a brazen bit of bravado, it is amusing.

Go take a look for yourself...

Source: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts Trailer, at GameVideos.com

Update: The original video was edited to remove the portion where Mario is destroyed.  Luckily, the guys over at The Rare Witch Project archived the original.

Graffiti Ruins Mario Art 03:56:56 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

What a shame. Look at that wall; it was a boring slice of vertical concrete boxcar until one brave gamer gave it life. Then, someone came and tagged. When will people learn the fine line between art and vandalism?

In all seriousness, I can't tell if the Mario art was meant to incorporate the ghetto-tag, but it still looks cool!

They Say, You Say: Mario Kart Wii 04:03:16 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

So, a week later, what's everyone got to say about Mario Kart Wii? I've complied some excerpts from reviewers on websites, and more importantly I've taken some well written opinions posted right in TMK's Fungi Forums. I strongly suggest you take both into consideration, and if you want to share your thoughts, feel free to comment!

What THEY Say
Game Informer Online
Ups:
- The control is brilliant, the courses are tuned to perfection, and everything is polished to a high shine.
- The light/medium/heavy choice is a strategic and stylistic decision rather than an opportunity to intentionally gimp yourself against inferior competition.
- This looks good…for a Wii game
Downs
- ...don’t bother with the stupid wheel
- ...the turbo change feels like a dumbing-down of the gameplay in the pursuit of a misguided desire to make it somehow easier for my grandma to pick up and play. Note to Nintendo: Stop.
- ... the overhaul of the mini-turbo system takes a while to get used to.

GameSpot.com
Ups:
- Huge number of courses, including some of the most imaginative yet
- Deeply integrated online play
- Fun and strategic trick system
Downs
- Nostalgia doesn't save most of the classic courses from being boring
- Items are more unbalanced than ever, especially on new tracks
- Battle modes are now exclusively team-based and timed.

IGN.com
Ups
- For the first time ever on a Nintendo console, the online portion trumps the single-player offering.
- Ghost racing is even more part of this Kart than any other out there
- IR supported menus, great Mii integration to hook the casual crowd, strong use of Wii's functionality, and another entertaining mascot racer. One of the best console Karts in years.
Downs
- Kart's 150cc experience is most certainly beatable, but it'll take as much luck and needless replay as it will skill, and that's a shame.
- The cars also feel like they're running at the 50cc speed class for online, and it's a bit too slow for our liking.
- the lack of voice chat for an extremely social online game

What YOU Say
Vidgmchtr
Ups
- The Wii Wheel actually does work fine, I like it.
- I thought the idea of karts AND bikes was pretty cool too.
- Yoshi's new vocals, they make me laugh
Downs
- Still no cup featuring all Rainbow Roads
- With the retro levels, I think they should've used the intros used in each MK game the track is from. Not important, but I think it'd be a nice touch.
- The items that can give a huge advantage (Lightning bolt, Blue shells, POW blocks, etc.) are WAY too common.

BirdPerson
Ups
- I love the textures on the Super NES tracks. To quote myself, it's like a 16-bit dream.
- Some sweet new tracks. Koopa Cape is awesome.
- I was worried, but I approve of Yoshi's new voice clips.
Downs
- No WarioWare Wario (c'mon, at least just for bikes?)
- No individualized karts or bikes. I miss the Egg 1.
- Not the best retro choices.

NintendoExpert89
Ups
- Playing as the Mii
- Great tracks
- Much, much shorter waiting time for Online Play
Downs
- Graphics seem recycled and unchanged since GameCube
- Battle Mode is changed
- Easy to be knocked off the track repeatedly

Now this isn't all the opinions or posts we've had concerning Mario Kart Wii. For the full experience, you need to check out and participate in the Fungi Forums. I'd also suggest heading into our chatroom, since users in there always have interested things to say that you might find helpful!

Force Dynamics is a company that produces motion simulators for trade show events and the like.  To demonstrate some of the capabilities of their equipment, they rigged up Super Mario Kart with their motion simulator.  If you've ever wondered what Super Mario Kart would be like in a wiggling chair, go take a look.  Sadly, they claim to have sold off the model they had programmed for SMK, so it appears that I might never get to try it out.

Totally Rad Mario Skateboard 01:46:47 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

I don't skateboard, but the minute I saw this board, I wanted to take it up and become a pro. You can live my dream if you outbid me on the above ebay item, a Super Mario World inspired skateboard, officially from Nintendo circa 1994. I haven't bid yet, but like a tiger in the bushes, you'll never see me coming if I do. Start the bidding, at 20.00 right now, below!

Warning: Mario Pins Poisonous 08:04:26 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Nintendo is recalling a series of lapel pins that were sold through Nintendo World Store and given away as promotional items to retailers, due to possible lead poisoning. The pins are pictured above (click to enlarge). I know I have just about all of these. Good thing I didn't let my son get a hold of them!

1up.com Spreads the Hate on MKWii 10:39:31 AM CT [Super-Jesse]

How ironic: a site whose namesake could *possibly* be derived from the Super Mario franchise always seems to be the quickest to criticize said franchise. Most visitors know how much we bemoaned their choices in the past, and now they got a new article up to boil the blood of Mario fans. Jeremy Parish's blog lays out exactly why he disliked Mario Kart Wii, from stating Mario Kart: Double Dash!! was a better title to calling the new tricks option "the stupid, stupid tricks system." Read on to see if his complaints are merited, or if they're just "explosively awful."

Weekend Movie: UT2D-Super Mario 10:36:21 AM CT [Super-Jesse]

To further those sessions between gaming, TMKblog will be providing you with Weekend Movie. These posts will highlight Mario related videos from fans, readers, or the staff themselves. If you come across a video, or videos, feel free to submit it!

This weekend's movie answers the question: Would Mario benefit from rocket launchers, unneeded violence, blood and gore? With help from Unreal Tournament 3, one player created a mod based on Super Mario Bros., keeping the look and feel true to the original game. This guy got the game down to the finest detail, so show him some appreciation by checking out this weekend's movie, "UT2D-SuperMario".

Man Your Desk, with a Starman 04:27:32 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

When I'm at work, I sometimes wonder what other clutter my desk needs. Aside from meaningless paperwork and pictures of my son, there's nothing that says "Jesse". Well, ThinkGeek seems to have pegged me down. They are selling this "Super Mario Singing Glow Star". The name explains it all: it plays the Starman theme and glows. Now, I can't guarantee it, but it's rumor that the Starman will also grant you temporary invincibility. Purchase below.

Super Paper Mario Super Good Price 10:28:48 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

In my mind, Super Paper Mario really set the stage for Mario on the Wii. Not to take away from Super Mario Galaxy, but one could argue which is the definite Mario title to own. Now amazon.com is selling the game for under 40.00 bucks, making this game a great deal for any of us that haven't been sucked into Dimentio's world.

Happy Earth Day! 04:14:29 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Super-Jesse here with a public service announcement from TMK. Today is Earth Day, are you doing your part as a gamer to help better your planet? Here are a few tips on how you can help:

1) Why not clean up some of the mess around your community? Mario did just that in Super Mario Sunshine. If that game is any indication, all you need is a tripe jump and a talking water pack!

2) How about sing a song to a tree? The Yoshi's have a fruit tree of their own they like to sing to, as seen in Yoshi's Story. "At the Airport", is it?

3) Trade in that gas-guzzler of a car for something smaller, like a Super Mario Kart? Don't worry, if you play your cards right, you may score that awesome gold kart from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

That's all I can think of for now, but you are more than welcome to post your own ideas (Mario-themed, of course) on how you can help the earth today!
Mario Kart Wii NA Commercials Blow Out! 04:07:39 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

You know those annoying car commercials that would interrupt the awesome "Wii Would Like to Play" commercials? Well, someone at Nintendo had the bright idea to combine the two, removing anything cool from the latter. What we have left is the commercials for Mario Kart Wii in North America. After watching them, which style of advertising do you prefer?

Japan Celebs Promote Mario Kart Wii 04:05:56 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Mario Kart Wii is getting a lot of hype (and big sales) in Japan. The promotions from Nintendo continue with this billboard featuring model Aki Hoshino and comedian Medaka Ikeno. I'm not too sure who they are, but they must be pretty popular if Nintendo's using them. If you follow the link below, you can also catch a Japanese commercial for MKWii.

Mario Changes Professions (Again) 04:05:33 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

WHAT: Video game icon Mario™ treats unsuspecting New Yorkers to a free cab ride. Mario is in New York to promote Mario Kart Wii, the new Nintendo racing game that features Mario and all of his Mushroom Kingdom buddies. He’s helping commuters race through the city before they get racing with Mario Kart Wii.

Mario Kart Wii launches April 27 and will be packaged with the Wii Wheel accessory, which lets players control the action on the screen just like they were steering a real car. The game also introduces a host of new courses, vehicles and eye-popping battle arenas, plus the ability to compete online with drivers from around the world using Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection.

WHO: Mario, everyone’s favorite Italian plumber, and excited (and grateful) New York commuters

    WHEN: Thursday, April 24/8-10 a.m. and 12-2 p.m.

    WHERE: Sheraton Hotel

    NEWS/VISUALS:

* Mario hailing down cabs for New York commuters
* New Yorkers queuing up for a free cab ride
* Mario costumed character

I'm sure people will welcome the change from the stereotypical cab driver. At least, I hope they do!

UK MSN Wants Most Iconic Gaming Character 09:12:03 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

UK MSN has a poll going to have readers decide which character in gaming is the most iconic. Super Mario Shadow Box is Outside the Box 04:08:36 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Since some think that Super Mario Land is "explosively awful", here's a neat idea to get Super Mario Bros. on the original Game Boy (sort of). Josh Burker stripped out a Game Boy and assembled a shadow box with the help of some Mario papercraft templates. Now all you have to do is recreate each frame, and get them in motion, somehow (good luck). Nice job Mr. Burker!

Mario Kart Wii Delayed in New Zealand 03:48:59 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Australia and New Zealand gamers have to go through a lot. It's hard to believe that Super Smash Bros. Brawl doesn't have a solid release date down under. Unfortunately, I have more bad news: Nintendo's New Zealand distributor has delayed Mario Kart Wii's release, just days before it was scheduled to launch in Australia and New Zealand simultaneously.

No new release date has been announced at this time.

Epic Games CEO Disliked Mario Galaxy 03:35:05 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Some of you might have heard about Epic Games CEO Mike Capps thoughts concerning the Wii, and I would say most of us don't entirely agree with what he said to say. There was one comment in particular I wanted to highlight to Mario fans. Mr. Capps didn't like Mario, and denounced its most unique feature, saying he wished for a "button instead of wiggle and all that kind of [expletive]."

Do you readers agree with that sentiment? Would Super Mario Galaxy have been better without the Wii remote features? Did the motion controls and pointer influence you either way?

Last Week, Nintendo invited a few journalists to a two-hour roundtable with Shigeru Miyamoto. The journalists asked him a variety of questions, ranging from the future of Nintendo to the future uses for the Wii Balance Board. One of the questions ventured into the possibility of Mario titles using the Wii Balance Board. Miyamoto said that he might make a Mario game that would indeed use the board, but he would never make it a requirement. He also stated that the team has been messing with the idea to use the Board on older titles to find "fun things we can do with them."

Check out the rest of the roundtable below!

Weekend Movie(s): Momotaro & SMG DS 03:26:48 AM CT [Super-Jesse]

To further those sessions between gaming, TMKblog will be providing you with Weekend Movie. These posts will highlight Mario related videos from fans, readers, or the staff themselves. If you come across a video, or videos, feel free to submit it!

This weekend, we have a double feature, thanks to two Fungi Forum users. SushieBoy sent me our first movie, "Momotaro". This video splices together peices from the Japanese only Super Mario Bros. anime movie. The result is something that will keep you entertained for the video duration, if only to see if it goes somewhere.

I found inspiration for our second video thanks to a topic brought up by Tutlekid1. For some reason, as I read the thread (linked in the previous sentence), I thought of "Super Mario Galaxy DS". If you didn't hear about this title, then you definitely have to check out what could have been (or may one day be).

Two interesting videos, one jam-packed weekend! Make sure to make room for our Weekend Movies, "Momotaro" and "Super Mario Galaxy DS".

Super Mario Super Coloring Book 07:11:41 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

This may be a bit old (circa December 2007), but for a slow weekend it will kill some time. James Elston is a free-lance illustrator, and at the beginning of December last year made some Super Mario color-in pages just for his 6-year old son. I am impressed by the work he put into them, especially since most of them he made without image manipulation. If anyone manages to print one out and color it, share it with us in the Fungi Forums!

Mario Kart Wii Driving School: Las Vegas 05:28:04 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Last weekend, the Mario Kart Wii Driving School had a pit stop in Las Vegas, NV, and #tmk user teh_yoshi was able to attend. You may have seen other videos and pictures, but trust me, the story behind this experience is one you have to read. Let me just say that I never have heard of someone being kicked out of a Nintendo event. Check out the story below!

MKWii Tops List of Must Play Nintendo Games 05:16:00 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Lofygaming.com took the entire library of upcoming Nintendo games and managed to pick 10 titles that Wii and DS owners can look forward to. Pass the obvious choices (like Mario Kart Wii), they make some good selections. Mind you, this is only amongst the titles we know about, and if Nintendo's past is any indication, there's bound to be a surprise soon.

Mario Wii Titles Among Most Tiring Games 04:43:49 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Nintendic.com listed five Wii games that have tired them out the most while playing. Out of the five, Mario Party 8 and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games earn spots. I do agree with them about Mario & Sonic; I remember being a bit sore and sweaty after that one!

Black Wii Wheel Out in the Wild? 04:24:53 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

A while back, The team behind Mario Kart Wii made mention of a Black Wii Wheel (as well as a Gold one) they had created but not intended to release... Or was it released? The above picture is from a NeoGAF user who claims that he has an official Wii Wheel in black. He doesn't mention where it came from, meaning as of now the likelihood of it being available through retail is low. Hard to deny one fact: That is the Wii Wheel, and it is indeed black!

What Mario Would Drive IRL 01:24:35 AM CT [Super-Jesse]

Gamedaily.com made a list for the cars they think Mario and friends would drive in real life, from Mario in a Ferrari Enzo to Bowser in a Chevy Suburban. I'm sure us hardcore Mario fans could come up with better choices, don't you? What's silly is that they gave Peach a Pink Cadillac, when we all know that's clearly Wario's ride!

Nintendo Ignoring Mario Galaxy? 01:04:14 AM CT [Super-Jesse]

Synergy(noun): the working together of mulitple things (muscles or drugs for example) to produce an effect greater than the sum of their individual effects.

That's what the writer from Kombo is looking for from Nintendo. Some kind of Synergy between the big three Mario titles released recently, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Mario Kart Wii. Not to ruin the entire article, but he would have liked Nintendo to include references between the three titles so that Mario doesn't seem so distant in each. An example he gives would be adding a Galaxy-like move for Mario in Brawl, or a Galaxy dedicated MKWii level.

Read the article to see his full explanation. It has some inaccuracies, but nonetheless, you'll see his point at the end.

In March, Nintendo again defined industry momentum in both home and portable video games sales, according to the independent NPD Group, which monitors retail activity in the video game industry. More than 720,000 Wii™ systems sold in March, representing the highest monthly sales total outside of holiday months (November or December) to date, while Nintendo DS™ also sold through nearly 700,000 systems.

Nintendo also finished with the top-selling U.S. game of March. Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which launched March 9, came in at No. 1 with 2.7 million units sold.

“Nintendo systems represented 58 percent of all video game hardware sold in March in the United States,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “We expect our momentum to continue with big upcoming game launches like Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit.”

Other March U.S. statistics, according to NPD, include:

* Three Wii games finished in the top 10, including Super Smash Bros. Brawl at No. 1, Wii Play™ at No. 4, and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock at No. 7.
* Nintendo DS has now sold more than 19 million units in the United States alone since it launched in November 2004.

Also, in Canada, Super Mario Galaxy landed the number three spot, while Super Smash Bros. Brawl took number one, of course. Read more here

It Begins: Mario Cakes 12:12:23 AM CT [Super-Jesse]

Thanks to Anthony D. for the idea!

Some of us aren't familiar with the craze of Game Cakes, so allow me to enlighten you. For about half a year or so, blog kotaku.com has been chronically posting video game inspired cakes. Now, these aren't your run of the mill, cookie cut-out cakes. No, these are epic cakes, ones that require so much skill you can call them works of art. That's about all there is to it.

What we have here is a few Mario Game Cakes I've found just by doing a quick Google Search. No rhyme or reason, just something fun to get your weekend started out right. Hopefully this will start some sort of weekly deal. If you like the feature, I'll keep doing it. If not, it'll disappear faster than Mario's Cousin Stanley!

Click over to "Discuss in the Fungi Forums" to see the first few cakes!

Four Tracks That Should Have Been in MKWii 12:11:16 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Wild Tyme blog has a list up of four tracks that the writer, Mike Leader, felt should have been in Mario Kart Wii. Among the four, he calls for a generic Mario Galaxy level, and a Virtual Console track. I think that would be have been pretty neat, if done the way he described it. Check out his other choices, and feel free to list some tracks you wanted to see!

April 16, 2008

If there ever was a "top" list I would disagree with whole-heartedly, it's this one. 1up.com has compiled a list of games that, in their mind, are the most awful launch titles of all time. Three Mario character titles make the list:  Donkey Kong Jr. Math, Super Mario Land, and Super Mario Advance. DK Jr. Math, okay, I could see that as being a bad idea for a launch title. Super Mario Advance I am on the fence about, considering it was a port. The game scored high amongst reviewers, and I personally had that game in my GBA for a long time.

However, I have to "explosively" disagree with Super Mario Land. Sure, it's no Super Mario Bros. 3, but it's definitely not a bad title at all. It was fun to play, challenging, and had a good soundtrack. I'd venture to say Luigi's Mansion is a better choice for this list than Super Mario Land.

Read on for 1up.com's attempt to legitimize their choices, and let me know what you think about them in the Fungi Forums.

Rumor: Paper Mario DS Coming in July 03:23:48 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Wondering what's next for the portly plumber after he races circles around your living room? The Wii Wheel Hard to Find (in Japan) 01:24:45 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Akihabara retailers are having a bit of trouble keeping the official standalone Mario Kart Wii wheel on store shelves. Fortunately, Datel Japan's Racing Handle is also being stocked, which sells for less and comes in white or black. Why all the trouble over the Wii Wheel, I have no clue. All I know is that I want that table cover for my next birthday party.

Why Nintendo of America doesn't start some kind of rewards club is a puzzle to me. While they do have mynintendo.com, the goodies we get here in no way compare to the stream of awesome that is Club Nintendo. Aussie gamers can now also partake in the service, which allows consumers to redeem points for exclusive Nintendo spoils and Wii Points. This news comes courtesy of The Age's Screenplay, a blog that made the discovery while going through their advance copy of Mario Kart Wii.

Fans of all ages are invited to the party, which starts at 2pm and ends at 6pm. Hey dude, remember those totally rad Mushroom Drum Pads some tubular fans made for Rock Band? Well, now you can plunk down cold hard coins for them on ebay! Videogamer.com has setup two videos that compare Mario Kart Wii to its console predecessors, Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart: Double Dash!! I watched the Mario Kart 64 one , and noticed two particular differences. Firstly, billboards and character art are updated to reflect something more in line with classic Mario. Secondly, everything is definitely bright and more inviting, particularly Bowser's Castle. If you can spot anything else interesting to note, leave some replies in the Fungi Forums!

Miyamoto's on Your Box, Signin' it 11:54:49 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

If I were to meet Miyamoto, I would get him to sign my pair of Legacy X Nintendo 07 Mario shoes, but having him sign a Mario game is a good alternative. Ebayer "gamingoffshore" is sending off a signed box of Super Mario 64 (PAL). Not only that, but it comes with the game and the original instruction booklet. Over 75,000 players competed, until finally the battle was narrowed down to twelve Semifinalist that duked it out on April 12th in San Jose, California. Interestingly, no comment was made on what character Mr. Martin used in the final round. Congratulations Lee Martin!

Nintendo: MKWii Not Dual-Layered 07:16:43 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

After numerous reports surfaced that Japanese gamers were suffering from game freezes and crashes, Nintendo assured gamers that Mario Kart Wii discs shouldn't have any problems. This is because, unlike Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the game is only available in a single-layered disc.

So, perhaps we are out of the woods now, Wii gamers.

Mario Kart Wii Sales Go into Overdrive 07:03:55 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

So how do UK gamers fill the void left by a uber-delayed Super Smash Bros. Brawl? They decide to buy Mario's other multiple control scheme release this year,
Mario Kart Wii, and boy did they ever. In fact, Mario Kart Wii has become the eighth fastest selling game in UK history, and beat out one week sales of the five previous Mario Wii titles released combined.

How awesome is Mario? Well, on top of all that, titles featuring him account for 21.2% of all Wii game sales since its UK launch. For the full sales chart, check out the link below!

Weekend Movies make their triumphant return! Even though it's not officially "summer" yet, I believe this is a good a time as any to bring back everyone's favorite feature (ok, my favorite feature). To hail in the 2008 edition of Weekend Movie, we have a video submitted to us by Scott Barrett. Entitled "Nintendo: Oldschool Revolution", this video isn't new to the internet (released before the Wii was known as the Wii), but nontheless interesting. With Mario in "game over" land, Luigi rounds up a cast of All-Stars to defeat the evil Master Chief and his army of Xbox! The video reeks of fanboyism, and a surprise ending is sure to delight at least a few. Please enjoy this weekend's movie, "Nintendo: Oldschool Revolution".

Nintendo UK has decided to remain hush-hush about a possible Mario Super Sluggers release for European territories. When videogamer.com attempted to get a confirmation of the game's release for the region, Nintendo UK stated they had "no current announcements".

Mario and Color-Blind Gamers 01:40:33 AM CT [Super-Jesse]

Color-Blindness and video games are never something I thought about until I saw this article. I'm sure a lot of color-blind people play video games, but is their enjoyment any less because of their impairment? Should developers try to accommodate to these individuals? Mario titles do use a very broad palette of colors, but would it matter to you if all you could recognize was the picture on the right? Much like some games have subtitles, the writer of the below linked article believes options to enhance the gaming experience for them should be implemented.

Anyone else care to voice their opinion?

10 Missed Mario Kart Features 10:07:41 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Famitsu's April issue is reporting that Mario Superstar Baseball (Wii) is set to release June 19th in Japan. If the rumor turns out to be true, that possibly means a North American (and presumably European) release wouldn't be fair behind. The Nintendo Media Summit, being held tomorrow and Friday in North America, will hopefully bring light to some new Mario related titles and release dates.

Link: gamepro.com

UPDATE: Thanks to some new information, the release date has been confirmed for Japan.

Honestly, when I heard the news, I was a bit surprised. Not that I am trying to downplay Mario Kart Wii's popularity, rather that GameStop is going to go this extra mile to open their stores that late for the game. As I read on, however, it seems this midnight launch is only being held at one store, with the other 49 stores in Europe holding off until normal business hours the next day. The lucky GameStop location is the Henry Street store, so anyone in that area is encouraged to stroll in on Thursday night and pick up a copy. As long as you had a reservation, that is.

If any visitors to TMK are attending, please let us know and post some pictures. Who knows what zany characters will come out for the game!

Artist Breathes Life into Real Life Mario 08:32:41 AM CT [Super-Jesse]

For the last month or so, a picture of a real-life looking Mario has been posted on the internet, but something was missing from that picture. While he did indeed look real, he didn't have that fire in his eyes that a real human being does. Well, a Deviant artist by the username of Portrix has decided to try and captivate that human essence by animating the Mario picture. The result? A really errie and disturbing version of Super Mario 64 start screen. I suggest you follow the link below at your own discretion.

Super Mario in 14kb JavaScript 12:19:21 AM CT [MEGAߥTE]

An interesting programming experiment sought to see whether a game could be stored in a single JavaScript file.  The author chose to implement Super Mario Bros. for the project.  No Flash or Java was used.  While the game isn't coded as completely as the real game (e.g. one level, no power-ups, poor physics, bad music), it is neat to see what can be accomplished in browsers with a small amount of code.  Look at it as a proof of concept of the internet to come.  The author also talks about a few tricks he used, with sprite storage analogous to the way sprites were stored on the NES.  As the game makes use of recent additions to JavaScript/HTML, try upgrading your browser if it doesn't work properly.

While I am not going to attempt to fully understand every aspect of the article, GamaSutra has an article up about the gravity system used in Super Mario Galaxy.  The more technically-minded folks out there might find it interesting -- as best as I can tell, the gravitational pull on Mario is generated based on the closest polygon on the planetoid and a single ray dropped down from Mario's center.

If this makes more sense to you than it does to me, you are either Megabyte or the sort of person interested in reading the article.  Go take a look, either way.

Mario Kart Wii Bundle in Europe? 08:59:46 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

It seems as if Mario Kart Wii is all over the place, and rightly so, with the release date just around the corner. However, this latest little tidbit concerning the game is hard to believe. Rumors are circulating on the internet states that Nintendo is planning a Wii system bundle that would include Mario Kart Wii and retail for €199,99, along with a price cut of €149,99 for the Wii Sports package. The rumor also mentions a possible third bundle that would come with two controllers and two games. The big change is expected to hit sometime in the middle of May.

Honestly, I could see the MKWii bundle, but the price cut seems too soon and the "two games" bundle seems too general for me. Voice your opinion in the Fungi Forums!

Mario Kart Wii Released Early in Europe? 07:24:32 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

A neogaf poster is claiming that retailers across Germany already began selling their copies of Mario Kart Wii. He's got a picture to prove at least one has been sold. The best news out of this is that the game won't just be sold in a sleeve, rather with a full case. A possible spoiler-rific thread is linked below, so proceed with caution.

The Kuribo's Shoe, known to some (incorrectly) as Goomba's Shoe, has beaten the Weighted Companion Cube, the Smashball, and Snake's Cardboard Box on gameradar.com's top 7 inanimate objects list. By claiming the number one spot, Kuribo's Shoe may perhaps one day best the "L" shaped Tetris block as gaming's most beloved icon. Congratulations, Kuribo's Shoe!

Mario Themed CubeCrafts Make Their Debut 12:18:17 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Website cubeecraft.com has the daunting task of coming up with new paper cube crafts on a weekly basis. For this past week, the site unveiled three Mario themed "cube-e-crafts" for visitors to download, print, and create. While the Question Block is a pretty obvious choice, Mario and Goomba both look like they took some "outside the box" thinking (pun intended). Cubeecraft.com also features a Kirby craft, so if you want a cheap way to act out your own Super Smash Bros. Brawl battles, this looks to be your chance!

To be fair, Super Smash Bros. Brawl isn' t the only big title for March, but the game is being credited as the catalyst for a sales rise last month. Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian is predicting that software sales for March rose about 35%, and SSBB is a big factor, which became Nintendo of America's fastest selling title one week in at 1.4 million units.

Sebastian speculated about April a bit as well, saying that he expects positive growing trends into the summer months due a solid release lineup across all three platforms, namely Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit for the Nintendo Wii.

Lastly, Sebastian touched a bit on the launch preparation of Wii Fit, which is rumored to have a Mario cameo. He stated that Nintendo may "consider incremental production and/or shifting of regional unit allocation."

Handy Brawl Pixel To Polygon Chart 11:56:52 PM CT [Super-Jesse]

Some of us remember the days of 8-bit Mario as simpler times, others remember it as "that thing dad always talks about when I play Halo". Nevertheless, Super Smash Bros. Brawl has brought together Nintendo fans of all ages to remember character roots. A Kotaku.com commenter by the name of "TaeK" took it upon himself to create a side-by-side chart that shows how far our favorite heroes (and villians) have come. Sure, it's is nothing spectacular, but it's pretty nifty and worth a gander. Take a look the chart in its entirety below!

Nintendo has published an interview Iwata conducted with three of the developers for the upcoming Mario Kart Wii title. The interview is full of interesting tidbits on the Mario Kart Series as a whole, with revelations to those unfamiliar or new to the series. Here's a snippet:

Iwata:  Why did you decide on using Mario?
Konno: Well, in the very first prototype, there was a guy in overalls sitting in the kart.
Iwata:  Wait just a minute! I can't let that slip by. Did you just say a guy in overalls?
Konno:  Sounds like Mario, doesn't it? It wasn't like I forgot to put Mario's beard on him or something, though… (laughs)

There's a cute little column over at 4 Color Rebellion about what happened when an English teacher asked his six year old students about Mario's family.  Strange relationships between Mario, Peach, Bowser, and Wario are presented.  It also seems Luigi is Mario's older brother, as "(h)e's taller".

I'm honestly not sure I find the kids' logic any worse than that expressed whenever the whole "Donkey Kong Lineage" thing comes up.

Remember Captain Olimar from Pikmin?  He's back and playable in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  The latest round of updates at the Smash Bros. Dojo website contains both a character profile for Captain Olimar and his Pikmin and a sample music track from the Pikmin series.

What's that?  You don't understand why TMK has a blog entry about Captain Olimar?  Just reverse the phonemes in the Captain's name.  "Oh"-"Lee"-"Mar" becomes "Mar"...
